2007 New York Yankees Picks & Predictions
June 16, 2008
New York Yankees fans are spoiled. I never could have imagined that so much negative publicity could surround a team that won 97 games and captured another AL East title. You would have thought that A-Rod was poison as bad as Yankees fans wanted to get rid of him in a season when he hit 35 homeruns and led the Yankees in RBIs. It will be the same story in 2007. A division title just isn’t going to cut it. What the fans, media, and Steinbrenner need to realize is that it’s the Yankees pitching staff holding them back.
The best the Yankees could do in the free agent market was, former Yankee, Andy Pettitte. This trade acquisition will pan out if the Rocket follows his good buddy to the Bronx. Mussina is solid but elbow problems have become more and more of an issue. Wang is the most consistent pitcher on the staff. He gets ground balls so he is going to pile up the wins as long as the Yanks can pick ‘em up and throw ‘em out. The pen is where the Yanks excel. I expect Farnsworth to blossom into an elite set-up man in the AL, and Mariano Rivera needs no introduction. The Yankees’ starters gave him only one lead in the divisional series in 2006. If he has a lead, there’s still no one better at shutting the door.
The Yankees talented lineup ensures that they will win at least sixty percent of their games again in 2007 and there probably won’t be a better home team in baseball. But this is a team that will lose you money if you try to back them on a day-to-day basis. Because the Yankees play in the big market of New York City and there is no more popular team in all of baseball, they get the most betting attention of any team in the major leagues. The Yankees are going to be an overvalued favorite over 90% of the time so when you lose with them, you are going to take a huge hit from the juice.
I recommend betting against the Yankees in 2007, especially on the road. The Yankees are often big favorites even on the road. This gives us a great opportunity to cash in on some nice home dogs. We know the Yankees pitching staff is going to take some lumps. We’ll look for our spots to bet against New York this season and it will mean nothing but profit over the long haul.
As far as the AL East is concerned, I think we’re looking at a two-team race with the Red Sox and the Yankees. Someone who hasn’t followed baseball in the last decade could have told you that, huh? The Red Sox appear to have a better starting rotation, but overall, Boston doesn’t appear to be a better team. I like the Yankees to take the AL East and win the divisional series, but that’s likely as far as they’ll go as there are better pitching teams in the American League to trump them.
