US Open Golf Tournament Odds 2008
June 4, 2008
The US Open is less than a week away and its time to take a closer look at odds for the 2008 US Open. The US Open is one of golf’s most historic events, as it was first established back in 1895. The Masters is the only major that is played on the same course year in and year out, so it’s hard to say that a golfer can build a strong history at the event. The US Open does require course to meet certain standards in order to make it one of golf’s most challenging events. You can almost always expect the course to play long and require great accuracy off the tees into narrow fairways. If you think you are good to go from the fairways you got another challenge coming, as the greens at the US Open are some of the toughest you will find. This year the US Open is heading back to Torrey Pines where many golfers will get a 2nd shot at this difficult course, as it is the host of the annual Buick Invitational played early on in the season. Angel Cabrera will be looking to defend his 2007 US Open victory, after he was able to take down Oakmont Country Club last season. Here is a quick look at some of the favorites, middle of the pack, and long shots to win the US Open.
Favorites: Tiger Woods 7-4, Phil Mickelson 7-1, Sergio Garcia 15-1, and Jim Furyk 20-1
While Tiger is the big favorite in this one, no one knows how he is going to come back from a 2-month lay off from knee surgery. If it wasn’t for Tigers great success at Torrey Pines his odds would of easily went down. Mickelson and Garcia both are looking for their first US Open, and both have big wins in the last few weeks making them good candidates to get it done. Furyk’s game is fit for US Open play as he is coming off back-to-back 2nd place finishes, not to mention he won the thing back in 2003. If we had to pick one it would be Tiger, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see any of the other 3 take home the trophy.
Middle of the Pack: Vijay Singh 25-1, Adam Scott 25-1, Padraig Harrington 25-1. Retief Goosen 25-1, Ernie Els 30-1, Geoff Ogilvy 30-1, Justin Rose, 30-1, and Stewart Cink 30-1
We get a lot bigger pool of players here, as odds makers aren’t thinking these guys will be able to finish on top the leader board. You might not of guessed it but there has been more past winners in this group than the favorites. Both Ernie Els and Retief Goosen have won the US Open 2 times; while Ogilvy is just 2 years removed from his 2006 win at Winged Foot. The rest of the pack all pretty much have a shot, but we would put our money on Scott or Harrington this year.
While there are still a number of golfers we left out of this group, these are the 10 we think have the best shot at pulling of an upset win this weekend. While its already old news to defending champ Cabrera and 2005 champ Michael Campbell, the rest of the field will hope for a magical weekend and a shot at winning one of golf’s greatest events. Out of this group we really feel that you can expect to see a good weekend from Leonard, Baddeley, and Sabbatini. For the rest of the golfers odds be sure to check the end of the article.
