UFC 80 Predictions & Betting Odds
May 27, 2008
Dave Price lists the UFC 80 odds for the Rapid Fire event taking place on January 19th below so you can know where to go to bet the best lines. This big time event will be taking place in Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle, England as UFC goes global with popularity continuing to grow worldwide.
As many of you know, the main event was originally scheduled for an Interim Lightweight Championship, but Lightweight title holder, Sean Shrek, has his UFC Lightweight title taken away when he was tested positive for nandrolene. Now the winner of the B.J. Penn vs. Joe Stevenson bout will be the undisputed title holder.
Jay Dee “B.J.” Penn is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu specialist with notable wins over Matt Hughes, Takanori Gomi, Jens Pulver, Caol Uno, Duane Ludwig, Matt Serra, Rodrigo Gracie, and Renzo Gracie. Penn is the first American-born winner of the World Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championship in the elite black belt division which he won back in 2000. Penn has held the title belt at the welterweight division in the UFC and is one of the most respected fighters in the UFC, as you can see by the list of top opponents he has knocked off. With Penn dropping down a weight class, one has to like his chances as he has already proven that he can hang with the big boppers. You can bet Penn at -280 at BetUS sportsbook.
Penn’s opponent is no slouch. I’m talking about American Joe Stevenson. Nicknamed “Daddy”, the 25-year-old Stevenson first made his mark on The Ultimate Fighter reality TV series where he won the season two welterweight division. That victory over Luke Cummo bought him a UFC contract. To be more of a force in the UFC, Daddy has moved down to the Lightweight division where he holds a number ten ranking in the world. Penn will have to watch out for Stevenson’s famous guillotine choke and his elbow strikes which have brought him much success. Bet on Stevenson at +235 at Sportsbook.com if you think he has what it takes to pull off the upset.
The heavyweight bout features Gabriel Gonzaga and Fabricio Werdum in a battle of Brazilian powerhouses. Gonzaga holds a very respectable 9-2 mixed martial arts mark, but it will be interesting to see how responds after going down for the first time in four years to Randy Couture last August. Despite that loss, he is still the favorite to win this heavyweight bout. Bet on Gonzaga at -225 at Bookmaker.
Gonzaga’s opponent, Fabricio Werdum is inexperienced in the UFC with just one UFC fight, which was a loss, but he has a professional MMA record of 9-3-1 and has beaten Gonzaga before. With Werdum coming from the same school of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, we are expecting a very close bout as both fighters know each other well. Bet on Werdum at +210 at Sportsbook.com.
