With the New York Giants slated as a double digit dogs going into Super Bowl XLII against the Patriots, it got me thinking about the greatest Super Bowl upsets in the history of the game. Let’s take a look at some of these upsets to show you Giants fans that a victory is still possible despite the odds being stacked against your team and the New England Patriots should know.

New England v. St. Louis

In Super Bowl XXXVI, New England took on the unstoppable St. Louis Rams as two touchdown underdogs. New England’s run to the title game was not pretty, and Tom Brady wasn’t Superman at that point. In fact, he reminded me a lot of the way Eli Manning has been playing. He managed the game and didn’t make costly mistakes. We all know how this one ends. Vinatieri’s 48-yard strike splits the upright and the Patriots pull off the unthinkable over Kurt Warner and the Rams.

New York Jets v. Baltimore Colts

When you talk about Super Bowl upsets, the first one that comes to mind has to be the New York Jets in Super Bowl III. The Jets opened as 18-point underdogs to the mighty Baltimore Colts and were 20-point pups by kickoff. The oddsmakers’ take didn’t sway Jets’ QB Joe Namath any. Broadway Joe guaranteed victory earlier in the week and delivered on Super Bowl Sunday with a 16-7 win.

Kansas City Chiefs v. Minnesota Vikings

One year later the AFC still wasn’t getting the respect it deserved. The NFC’s Minnesota Vikings were heavy 10-point favorites in Super Bowl IV. Not only did Hank Stram’s Chiefs win, they won by 16 points, embarrassing the NFC champs. That win finally showed the world that the AFC was the real deal and the next 9 Super Bowl point spreads were 7-points or less.

New York Giants v. Buffalo Bills

One of the most memorable upsets came in Super Bowl XXV when Bill Parcells’ New York Giants beat the mighty Buffalo Bills by a hair. Buffalo was just a 7-point favorite, but nobody was giving the G-Men a chance. The image you might remember in this one is Scott Norwood’s field goal sailing wide right to solidify the Giants as Super Bowl champions.

Denver Broncos v. Green Bay Packers

John Elway and the Denver Broncos were 12-point dogs against Brett Favre and the defending champion Packers in Super Bowl XXXII. Elway had been to the Super Bowl 3 times previously, going down in all 3, and oddsmakers weren’t giving him much of a shot here in what looked like it could have been his final season. The Broncos blasted the Packers 31-24 thanks to a big time performance by running back Terrell Davis. Elway liked the feeling so much that he stuck around to win another one the following season.
