2007 Boston Red Sox Picks & Predictions
May 27, 2008
The Red Sox’s streak of three straight postseason trips was ended last season by a third place finish in the AL East. Doesn’t Toronto know that the Red Sox have dibs on the number two spot in the division? No need to worry Red Sox fans as your team will regain its rightful second place finish in the AL East in 2007.

Red Sox management decided that if a $135 million payroll didn’t get the job done in 2006 that they would tack on an extra $25 million in 2007. Not only is Daisuke Matsuzaka a name that I don’t want to look up how to spell again, but it is a name that you may here plenty about in the bust category. I don’t think he will be in the long run. He is better than Nomo, but if Bean Town is looking for instant coffee, they probably aren’t going to get it. The Red Sox will go as far as Beckett and Schilling take them.
Manny and Big Papi are the offense. This is where the Yankees get a leg up on the Sox as they have more balance through their order. In 2006, Manny’s numbers took a slight dip as he played 22 less games than he did in 2005 and so did Boston’s record. Ortiz once again brought his big stick to the plate last season. If he hadn’t, the Red Sox may have slipped even further behind the Blue Jays. This is a team which cannot afford to have either of these big boppers out of the lineup as they are the run producers for Boston. Boston threw J.D. Drew in its shopping cart looking for some more pop, but I feel like this move is wasted money. Drew hasn’t showed that he can withstand the wear and tear of a season. Get ready for this injury-riddled player to move on soon.
If you are a Red Sox backer, you’re going to want to take a close look at your team interleague play. In 2006, Boston was an amazing 16-2 against the National League. Boston’s pitching staff would take just about any NL team to the World Series and it should have its way against the less powerful NL teams. Outside of interleague play and outside of the AL East, we’ll look for our spots to bet against Boston, especially on the road. The Red Sox are another very popular team like the Yankees and the Mets who get extensive betting attention. With inflated money lines, we should find some great opportunities to cash in on home dogs by going against the Red Sox. Boston was just 38-43 away from Fenway last season. The Red Sox play on the road will definitely be something to keep an eye on as we look for our spots to bet against this team.
