2007 Texas Rangers Picks & Predictions
May 27, 2008
The Rangers showed improvement in 2006, but not the kind that management is thrilled about. Texas won just one more game in 2006 than it did in 2005, which would be good if this team was playing better than .500 baseball. Many sports analysts are confident that Texas finds the number two position in the AL West this season, but I’m not so quick to jump on that band wagon. The Rangers are the only AL West team not to make the playoffs in the 21st century, and they won’t even be close to being due until they can get some contending starting pitching.

Texas’ starting rotation has far too many holes in it after Kevin Millwood and Vicente Padilla. Millwood went 16-12 last season and Padilla went 15-10, but they were the only pitchers on the Rangers with more than 10 wins and more than 162 innings pitched. Not even a potent offensive lineup can make up for lackluster pitching as we have seen from the New York Yankees the past couple seasons.
The Boys from Arlington have been a new version of the Bronx Bombers the past few seasons with six guys hitting over 20 round trippers. 2006 wasn’t as productive a year at the plate, and the Rangers more than likely won’t be the bomb squad they were in 2005, but this team still has plenty of pop. This lineup is very capable of breakout stretches where it can put eight or nine runs per game on the board blowing teams out. Look for the Rangers to be very deadly at home where no lead is safe against this team.
If you have branded Texas as a bad team, you’ll need to remove that thought right now. The Rangers should be a very profitable home team in 2007. The Rangers were a very impressive 66-38 at home in the 2004 and 2005 seasons against teams outside their division. Texas was also a very solid home team in 2006 and faired very well against the toughest division in baseball, the AL Central, putting up a 25-15 record. But as you might expect, they struggle mightily on the road against non-division teams. This is because of a lack of depth in the starting pitching department and hitters just aren’t able to settle in as well at the plate on the road. We’ll bank on the Rangers at home in the right spots and look to fade them on the road in 2007 unless they show us surprising improvement.
The A’s and the Angels still appear to be a couple steps ahead of Texas in the American League West as their pitching staffs have more depth.
