Overrated NFL Teams to Fade with Football Picks
August 19, 2008
September is now just around the corner and every sports bettor knows what this means. It marks the start of the new football season and the beginning of NFL betting. With this being said there are always a couple very overrated teams each year who do not live up to expectations. I would like to take a look at some teams who just wont be as successful as many people think they will be. Let’s take a look:
Philadelphia Eagles – The Eagles always seem to get a lot of hype when they are not that good of a football team. Last season they finished a disappointing 8-8 and were at the bottom of the NFC East division. They were plagued by a lack of playmakers and may have this same problem again this year. It is very uncertain whether or not quarterback Donovan McNabb can remain healthy throughout the entire season. If he happens to get injured again then the Eagles will have to go to Kevin Kolb, who has very little experience and this could spell a lot of trouble.
Philadelphia also does not really have a balanced offense. They relied very heavily on running back Brian Westbrook last season to carry the load. He is an excellent player but cannot do it on his own. The Eagles did manage to bring in Kevin Curtis as a wide receiver who could help their team. On the defensive end of the ball they are just above average. Philadelphia did add cornerback Asante Samuel to the lineup and he could play a pivotal role. Again, he is only 1 man and can’t carry the entire team. I feel like the Eagles will finish 8-8 again this year and finish 3rd in the NFC East.
New Orleans Saints – Last season the Saints failed to make the playoffs after they had a fairly decent run the year before. They need to improve drastically on the defensive end of the ball, where they were among the leagues worst, ranked 26th. New Orleans pass rush was horrific last year as Will Smith and Charles Grant only combined for 9.5 sacks. These numbers are just not going to get the job done. Also, the Saints have been missing a playmaker in the linebacker position, so they traded for Jonathan Vilma. It is still questionable whether or not he will stay healthy and this is a gamble. New Orleans weakest link is of course their secondary. The Saints ranked 30th in passing yards allowed and they gave up 32 passing touchdowns, which was tied for the most in the entire NFL. Although they have made several moves to try to improve on their defense, I still think it is going to take a couple more years for them to truly be competitive. They are another overrated team which is based on how their offense performs. The Saints ranked fourth in the league in offense but this alone cannot lead to success, they need some balance. I feel the Saints will hit the .500 mark this year but are just not a playoff caliber team.
