Despite enduring injuries to former league MVP Shaun Alexander and All-Pro QB Matt Hasselbeck, the Seattle Seahawks were able to capture yet another division title in 2006. While the 49ers, Rams, and Cardinals continue to mature their youth, the veteran Seahawks should enjoy at least one more season at the top of the NFC West division.
The San Francisco 49ers were a pleasant surprise winning seven ball games last season and we saw Frank Gore emerge as one of the best backs in the league and perhaps the best back in 49ers history. QB Alex Smith must continue to gain confidence and improve his decision making skills before the 49ers will be ready to overtake the Seahawks. The defense is also in need of playmakers at every level.
The Arizona Cardinals are another team in this division which has made the right moves on the offensive side of the football but haven’t got to the defensive side of the ball yet. Matt Leinart looks to be the right guy under center and receivers Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin are among the best in the NFL. This young QB just needs more snaps and the Cards need some more defensive help before they can worry about a division championship.
The Rams also join the all offense and no defense club that this division is outside of Seattle, which isn’t great on defense either but good enough. Stephen Jackson and Marc Bulger make up an All-Pro backfield to be reckoned with, but not having a consistent defensive unit puts too much pressure on this offense to get points every series.
We feel that the Seahawks should be a larger favorite than the books have made them so we will jump at the opportunity to get them at +130 here. Anytime you can get a solid favorite showing solid value, you just can’t let them get away.
