There’s no question in my mind that the Chargers took a hit with their All-Star coaching staff being dismantled. No more Marty, Cam, or Wade to collectively make up the best staff in the NFL so the Chargers will rely on their talent under a new regime. We feel it will be enough although we don’t feel that San Diego will distance itself from the rest of the pack the way they did in last year’s 14-2 campaign. As long as Norv Turner plans on implementing a scheme which features a steady dose of LaDainian Tomlinson, the Chargers will be alright. San Diego also boasts the best defense in this division with a lethal pass rush coming off each corner. Denver should finish second as their offseason acquisitions of running back Travis Henry and defensive back Dre Bly make this team even stronger, narrowing the gap between themselves and San Diego. The Broncos’ young QB Jake Cutler will likely endure several bumps and bruises in his first full season as the starter. He and an inconsistent defense is why we must take the Chargers to win the AFC West once again.

The Chiefs found their way into the playoffs last season, but that likely won’t be the case again this year. Herman Edwards’ control scheme which features a ground attack will keep the Chiefs in a lot of games, but a lack of fire power will not allow K.C. to get over the hump.

The Oakland Raiders are of course the bottom dwellers out West despite having the second best defense in this division. There’s no chance of a winning campaign in Oakland this season, but if Daunte Culpepper or number one draft pick JaMarcus Russell show promise, the Raider also should see hope on the horizon.

The Chargers have perhaps the most complete roster in all of football with a Pro Bowl backfield and the game’s best pass rusher. We’ll take them to win the AFC West in 2007.
