Odds to win the AFC South in 2007
May 27, 2008
If the New England Patriots are the class of the AFC East, the defending Super Bowl champion Indianapolis Colts are clearly the class of the AFC South and the odds reflect it. Sports bettors are going to have to lay heavy juice to get the Colts as their AFC South champions, but some bettors will likely think about this one where as we’re sure that many aren’t going to pay the 1/6 odds that some books offer on the Patriots.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are clearly in the driver’s seat for second place in this division with a very talented highly touted defensive unit. But with a very inconsistent offense, we can’t possibly think about taking the Jags as a sleeper here. The Colts showed that they could mow down there opponents in 2006 with a bad run defense, and with the way they tightened things up in the playoffs, we can anticipate a much better year defensively against the run. As long as Peyton manning has his All-Pro offensive line and a couple All-Pro caliber wideouts, the Colts will be the staple atop this division. Injuries, Injuries and more injuries will be the only thing that could possibly keep the Colts from winning the South. We’re talking only if Peyton Manning is hurt will this team come up short in this division.
Vince Young certainly did take this league by storm in his rookie year, but the Titans did nothing in the offseason to help him out so it looks like “the hike it to Vince and make something happen” offensive scheme will be re-instated in 2007. The Titans 8-8 season got fans all revved up to see a big letdown this year. Tennessee won’t touch the .500 mark.
The Houston Texans won’t touch the .500 mark either and the books are on the money by making Houston the weakest team in this division. It’s going to be transition season, to put it nicely, with a new QB in town who is expected to make everything alright. Honestly, until the Texans can get some big boys in town to block, no QB is going to thrive. At least the defensive side of the football is starting to see some improvement, but with this unit likely spending way too much time on the field, they will be more susceptible to injuries and tired defenses are often blown out late in games.
