Odds to win the AFC North in 2007
May 27, 2008
Heading into the 2006 season, the AFC North was supposed to be a three-team race between the Ravens, Bengals, and Steelers, however, the Ravens stole the show. In 2007, we have this thing narrowed down to a two-team race between the Ravens and Bengals. The odds makers have actually made the Cincinnati Bengals slight favorites over the Ravens heading into the 2007 season despite the off-the-field issues this team has had.

We can all agree that the Cleveland Browns are not going to win the North this season. A decent draft class may have given this team something to look forward to in the future, but it is clear that Romeo Crennell’s team is not ready to compete.
The Steelers will now have to play for another man who won’t be able to match the motivational charge that Bill Cowher brought to this team. With Roethlisberger now likely playing in a more pass oriented system, we will see if he can get this team back in a position to win a Super Bowl, but we feel it’s going to take some time. He played in a very pass-oriented system in college and this may be a good move for the Steelers in the long run, but it’s going to be a different feel with their normally strong running attack slated to take a back seat. There’s definitely going to be an adjustment period so we don’t feel the Steelers will be ready to contend in 2007.
Because defense continues to win championships, and it brought an AFC North title to Baltimore last season, we will take the Ravens to win the AFC North again. Baltimore’s defense is head and shoulders better than the Bengals’ defense and Baltimore also appears more focused than the Bengals heading into the season. Cincinnati definitely has the most potent offensive attack in the AFC North, but it still lacks consistency and the defense leaves plenty to be desired. Baltimore lacks a premier pass rusher and its secondary is horrendous. The Ravens will be every bit as talented as last season, but now they also bring experience to the table with that talent. At +160, the value in taking the Baltimore Ravens is fairly good and we won’t hesitate to make this play.
