With the NFL season quickly approaching we will take a look at the NFC West and who is likely to come out on top. It looks like it is going to be a one horse race, with Seattle being the massive favorite. Let’s take a look at their team and odds as well as the rest of the NFC West:

Seattle Seahawks ( Odds to Win the NFC West -118) – Even with the addition of several players this year it looks like Seattle’s offense is going to decline. The defense however is one of the best in the entire league. Some of the number may be a little inflated in 2008 because Seattle has a very weak schedule. The Seahawks have the talent to win the NFC West and are big favorites. Last year they averaged only 20.6 points per game but were number 2 in points allowed with only 18.1 a game. In the off season Seattle has added running back Julius Jones but his impact might not be all that positive. Jones is only an average NFL back and he really lacks the dynamic ability in both the run and the pass game. He will replace Shaun Alexander and is nevertheless and upgrade. Seattle should take the NFC West with no real problems.

San Francisco 49ers ( Odds to Win the NFC West +750) – Before the beginning of the 2007 season the 49ers were making all the correct moves to get back into contention in the NFL. They were then hit by many injuries to some very key players and were not able to compete. This off season, San Francisco again made some big moves. Some of their young guns are now maturating and seeing what it is like to play in the NFL. The 49ers also acquired Mike Martz to take over the offensive. Last year they averaged 25.3 points per game and allowed 24.8 per game. This is not a winning mix as they look to improve this season. San Francisco will rely heavily on Frank Gore to lead the way. He is an injury risk but his production will be up there if he can stay healthy.

Arizona Cardinals ( Odds to Win the NFC West +225) – It seems like the Cardinals have really missed their window of opportunity to win the NFC West. Running back Edgerrin James in now on the back end of his career and his numbers are dropping. Also quarterback Matt Leinart consistently has injury problems and cannot stay healthy. Arizona has a lot of potential with so many good high draft choice players. They need to keep everyone healthy and work together if they want to compete in the NFC West.

St Louis Rams ( Odds to Win the NFC West +500) – This upcoming season the Rams will really have a tough schedule so it will be hard for them to get off to a good start. St Louis’s first 7 games are against 5 good playoff teams including both Super Bowl teams. Also, all 7 teams were .500 or better. This is really going to hurt their chances of winning the NFC West. The Rams will look to running back Steven Jackson to lead them as he is a monster but don’t expect them to fair that well.
