2007 New York Mets Picks & Predictions
May 27, 2008
Dave Price is big on the Mets in 2007 as no other team in baseball has three legitimate MVP’s in the top of the order. I’m of course referring to David Wright, Carlos Beltran, and Jose Reyes. Add these three stellar talents to a solid starting rotation and veteran sluggers like Carlos Delgado, Moises Alou, and Shawn Green, and you have yourself a World Series Contender.
There are better starting rotations across the league, but the Mets pitchers have playoff experience. Tom Glavine will get his 300th win this year to solidify a spot in the Hall, and how can you argue with eight seasons and eight playoff teams with Orlando Hernandez. John Maine has been a very quick leaner with the Mets going 10-2 in his last 12 regular season starts. If Pedro Martinez is healthy, it’s just icing on the cake. These guys’ names aren’t as big as some across the league, but collectively they’ll get the job done and they have a better supporting cast than perhaps any team in the majors.
The Mets put just about every team in the bigs to shame when it comes to the bullpen. Billy Wagner converted 40 of 45 saves in the regular season in 2006 with 22 more strikeouts than innings pitched. This guy will be better this time around in the postseason. You can bet on it.
All I have to do is mention the names and you know how good this offense is. When you have a stick like David Wright in the number five slot, you know you are stacked. Twenty other major league teams would have him batting third. If the injury bug stays away from some of the vets like Alou and Green, the Mets could threaten some team homerun records.
A good year in 2006 and prospects of a better year in 2007 will have the Mets huge favorites a lot this season. New York showed us that it can be a very good road team, and that it can clean up the teams in the NL East in 2006. We’ll look to play the Mets on the road, as they will show better value away from home, especially within their division.
This year is the year for the Mets, right? Well, everything looks to be in place, but now New York has something called pressure that it has to play against besides its opponents. These guys know that anything other than a World Series ring will be considered a disappointment. Capturing the National League East shouldn’t be too much of a problem. The Mets will probably do that by 10 games or more. Getting past the Cardinals or Dodgers in October could be a problem though. I think New York has the team to get to the World Series this year, now it’s just up to them to perform.
