How to Bet on NBA Basketball Games
June 16, 2008
If you don’t know how to bet the NBA then read this article by Dave Price in order to figure out a few tips and tricks that will allow you to win more of your wagers. The first thing you need to know is pretty basic, but it’s how to read the point spread. If Chicago is headed to Miami and the spread reads Miami -3, that means that Miami needs to win the game by 4 points or more. If then win by 2 or less then you’d lose money by backing them.
Bet on the NBA Using Your Credit Card!
You can also bet on money lines and totals. Money lines are based off 100, so -120 means risk $120 to win $100 and a +150 would be risk $100 to win $150. Totals are just the combined points for both teams, including overtime, and comparing it to the odds. You can bet over their number or under it. So if the total is 195 and the total score is 100 to 98, if you bet on the over you win and under bettors would lose.
So now that you know how to bet the NBA, here are some tips and tricks we use to win at NBA betting.
1. Public Teams: The Los Angeles Lakers are the most popular team in the world and you can make money by going against them in the right situations. This team has a large following and the odds makers are going to want to even out the action by adjusting the lines slightly to balance the action. When a favorite player or team is on television then this applies even more.
2. Overnight Lines: We like to get our plays out early in the morning when there is more information available, but if you handicap the night before then you can take advantage of some weak lines. If you watch the line movements you’ll notice up to 3 or 4 points of movement in a 24 hour period, so if you are good, you can take advantage and get a better number.
3. Road Trips: How many games in a row has a team been on the road? All those nights away from their family and loved ones might start wearing on the players as they long to sleep in their own beds. Teams could be looking past the game and to the plane ride home back to their city.
4. Back-to-Back nights: Teams in the NBA play spurts of games at times. You can take advantage by betting against teams that played late the night before, or teams that went into overtime or had a close and heated battle with a rival the night before. It’s going to be tough for these teams to keep active night in and night out.
5. Tanking: At the end of the season pay close attention to the teams that are out of the playoff chase and might be losing games in order to up their chances of a high lottery pick. Of course nobody admits to this, but you can’t say that weak teams don’t have this in mind towards the end of the year, especially when a really great player is heading the next year’s draft class.
