The Houston Texans will play for the first time on Monday night football this season but what they really want is a playoff birth for the first time. Quietly the Houston Texans have put together a nice little team that could surprise most NFL prediction experts. The NFL betting odds for the AFC South Houston Texans is at 75-1 to win the 2009 Superbowl.

Matt Schaub leads a Houston offense that is influeneced heavily by head coach Gary Kubiak. Kubiak likes to run first and throw second with a heavy dose of short passes. Houston’s vertical passing game is sometimes explosive with emerging superstar WR Andre Johnson. The 6′3″ 230 Lb. Johnson (4.30 40-time) is joined by some oversized wideouts that are inviting targets for QB Matt Schaub. Schaub is an average NFL starter that will be happy to have his #1 RB Ahman Green back healthy. Green is an aging back however that is probably better suited as a backup at this stage of his career. Added from Houston is slashing 6′3″ 220 Lb. RB Chris Brown from Tennessee. Brown has 4.45 40-speed but has underachived 5-year NFL career. The offensive line was respectable last year and expectes more improvement under new offensive line guru Alex Gibbs. The NFL betting odds for the AFC South Houston Texans is at +1000 to win the AFC South division.

All-Pro DE Mario Williams leads an improving Houston 4-3 defense that ranked 22nd in the NFL last season. One factor for making early NFL predictions will be the subtraction of Houston’s best man in the secondary CB Dunta Robinson for at least the first 4 games due to injury. Robinson will be replaced by the gifted but inexperienced 6′0″ 197 Lb. CB Fred Bennett. Despite some anticipated woes in the secondary the Texans have a fine front seven. Next to Williams is another defensive menace on the line in DT Amobi Okoye. Okoye has excellent quicknees and could record double digit sack numbers this season. MLB DeMeco Ryans is the star of the defense and the scary part is that he is still improving. The 6′1″ 239 Lb. Ryans is a durable, intinctive ballhawk with great football intelligence. The special teams are excellent with a solid kicking game and an explosive return man in Andre’ Davis.

Houston should be a tough opponent for anybody but they lack the O-line and back seven to compete with the NFL’s elite. Expect Houston to pull some upsets on their way to a 6-10 or 7-9 season in the rugged AFC South. The NFL betting OVER\UNDER for the AFC South Houston Texans is at 7.5 wins TOTAL with the OVER at -125.
