How to Bet to Teams that Run a Spread Offense
May 22, 2008
Not only was the 2007 college football season the year of the upset, but it also marked the real emergence of the spread offense. A number of teams that run this system came up big and brought it into the limelight, including Appalachian State, Hawaii, Texas Tech, Missouri, and Kansas. They made big waves and jumped up to national media attention.
So what is the spread offense? It involves spreading the field horizontally, typically using 3-5 wide receiver sets as well as wider splits between the offensive linemen. This opens up vertical gaps for both the running and passing game to use and the defense is forced to spread itself thin across the field in the hopes of covering all of the options. It enables teams to get the most out of their skill players by isolating matchups. More one-on-one matchups are created because there is no bunching on the field.
The first real strike for the offense happened back on September 1st when Appalachian State beat Michigan. Quarterback Armanti Edwards was able to throw for 227 yards, 3 TDs and had 62 yards rushing and a touchdown. This big win may be a big reason for Rich Rodriguez being hired as the next Wolverine head coach, due to the success he has had running the spread at West Virginia.
Plenty of other schools have become ranked near the top of the list this year, including Hawaii, Texas Tech, Missouri, and Kansas. You can’t argue with the success these teams had this year with big bowl games and a combined record of 42-7. Then you have to also look at what the spread offense did at Florida for Tim Tebow, helping him become the first sophomore to win the Heisman behind his gaudy numbers. The spread is here to stay and it will help to know the schools running it when it comes to college football betting.
