Sunday Sept. 14th, an AFC West showdown is in the making, as the San Diego Chargers get ready to take on the Denver Broncos. Last week the Chargers suffered a heartbreaker when Carolina was able to throw a 14 yard pass with no time remaining to win the game 26-24. The Broncos made easy work of the Raiders in game 2 of a special edition of Monday Night Football, as they wound up winning 41-14.

Current Odds at JustBet.com
Chargers +1
Broncos -1

The Chargers came into the first game of the season with high hopes after a great finish to the 2007 season, and it looked like they were going to sneak out a win coming back from a 19-10 deficit to take a 24-19 lead, but a last second miracle crashed the hopes to the floor. The Chargers offense did perform pretty well as Phillip Rivers was able to throw for 217 yards and 3 touchdowns, while running back LaDainian racked up 97 yards on the ground, but was unable to find the endzone. Gates led the Chargers in receiving grabbing 4 balls for 61 yards and a score, but did have a costly fumble that was returned for a touchdown by the Panthers. Vincent Jackson and Chris Chambers were the other two targets Rivers was able to find in the endzone. WIth the Broncos offense looking solid, the Chargers will likely have to put a good chunk of points on the board this weekend.

The Chargers defense was pretty solid, but it wasn’t as good as it looked at the end of last season, as they allowed Delhomme to throw for 247 yards, while the Panthers backs were able to combine for 142 yards. The surprising stat in this one, is the only touchdown the Chargers defense gave up the whole game was on that final play, so its no like this unit didn’t play well enough to win the game. They will have to bring their “A” game again this weekend, when the Broncos offense attack takes aim. This week the Chargers will start their season without star linebacker Shawne Merriman, as he has decided that surgery on his knee is the right way to go.

Speaking of the Broncos, wow did they look impressive against the Raiders last week, and yea the Raiders are the Raiders, but scoring 41 points on any team in the NFL is worth taking a look at. Cutler looked great throwing for 300 yards and 2 touchdowns, and it looks like the Broncos have found a solid No. 2 receiver in rookie Eddie Royal who had 9 catches for 146 yards and a score. The ground game wasn’t that great, but it really didn’t have to be. What is a little scary about the passing game, is they get No. 1 receiver Brandon Marshall back from his 1 game suspension. The Chargers are solid on defense, and it will be a good test to see if last week was a minor fluke, or this Broncos is for real.

The Broncos did a solid job on the defense side of things as well, holding Russell to just 180 yards, but the rush defense still has some concerns, as Justin Fargas and rookie Darren McFadden were able to combine for 143 yards. This week the Broncos have the tough task of stopping LT, and its hard to imagine they will be able to keep him out of the endzone for two straight weeks. They need to just keep him in check and make Rivers beat the Broncos great pass defense.

Predicted Score:
Chargers 23
Broncos 24
