Recap

USC had a decent year in 2010-11 having a 19-15 record as well as a fourth place finish in the Pac-10 conference.  In the conference tourney Southern Cal made it to the semifinals, then proceeded to go down in the play-in game of the tourney to Virginia Commonwealth.

USC obtained results by being a good defensive team.  Southern Cal held their opponents to 40.9% from the floor shooting and also to 63.3 points per game.

The departures of Nikola Vucevic and Alex Stepheson is going to be challenging to replace.  Vucevic averaged 17.1 points every game and brought down 10.3 boards per game.  Stepheson was the team’s second leading rebounder at 7.2 every game and also contributed 9.8 points.

2011-12 Overview

Kevin O’Neill has been the Trojan head coach for two seasons and has supplied the fans teams that play tough and improve as the year progresses.  This year’s team has a whole lot of production to replace, but O’Neill does have Jio Fontan, Maurice Jones, and Garrett Jackson all back.  Together with a solid recruiting class the Trojans brought in transfers Aaron Fuller and Dewayne Dedmon.

Backcourt

USC is going be heavily relying on their guard starters of Fontan and Jones.  Fontan sat out fall semester last season, but returned to pace the group in assists and ended up second in points at more than ten points each contest.

Jones was 3rd on the Trojans in offense with 9.9 points every game, dished out 110 total assists, and set the team record with 69 steals as a freshman.  His achievements helped to get paid a place on the Pac-10 All-Freshman squad.

Bryon Wesley is a 6’5″ freshman perimeter player who is expected to contribute on the offensive side immediately.  Alexis Moore is another freshman who really should see action and contributes properly on each side sides of the floor.  Junior college transfer Greg Allen can be a solid defender and can shoot 3.

Frontcourt

USC’s three big men should be Aaron Fuller, Dewayne Dedmon, and James Blascyk.  Fuller was forced to sit out the 2010-11 year soon after transferring from Iowa.  In his sophomore season for the Hawkeyes he was honorable mention on the All-Conference team with 9.7 points and almost 7 boards every game.

These players will likely be pushed in practice by a couple of transfers who will sit out this year.  Ari Stewart came over from Wake Forest and Eric Wise is a transfer from UC-Irvine.

They beat UConn handily in the last regular season game, but were beat by the Huskies by a couple of points in the Big East tourney. Pitt didn’t have much luck in the NCAA tournament either, getting beat in the second round to Butler.

This year’s edition of the Pitt Panthers will have only two starters returning. However, coach Dixon has established a winning foundation and the program has shown to be able to reload when losing superb players.

Backcourt

Pitt’s backcourt play centers around Asthon Gibbs. Gibbs was thinking about declaring for the NBA draft, but pulled out due to the uncertain labor situation. Last year he put up almost 17 points per game on nearly 50% 3-point shooting.

Taking the place of Brandon Wanamaker will be Travon Woodall. Woodall is an excellent defender who is going to have to live up to the hype of being a decent distributor.

Providing depth will be Cameron Wright, Durand Johnson, and John Johnson.

Frontcourt

The Panther’s largest losses came in the post that is going to be devoid of Gilbert Brown and Gary McGhee. Having said that, the Panthers do get some reliable players back to go along with some top-level recruits.

Nasir Robinson will deliver the expertise to the court. Last season he averaged 9.4 points and 4.9 rebounds for each game, but he should get additional minutes this year.

Khem Birch was a McDonald’s All-American and one of the most-wanted big men coming out of high school. Malcolm Gilbert was also desired by a good deal of colleges on account of his rebounding and shot blocking capabilities.

Giving the team with some extra minutes will likely be Dante Taylor, JJ Moore, and Talib Zanna.

Not much was expected out of Iowa State last season. Virtually all people figured they could be at the bottom of the Big 12 conference with just two players back from the season before, however the Cyclones were sort of a surprise. Usually, it’s difficult for individuals to become energized about a .500 season, nevertheless it was the first time Iowa State did not possess a losing record since the 2005-6 season.

In Fred Hoiberg’s initial season, Iowa State entirely adjusted their identity. Backcourt

The Cyclones are planning to have to find a way to replace Dainte Garrett’s production. He was a quality point guard who blotted his name all over Iowa State’s history books for both assists and points.

There is still lots of talent in the Cyclone backcourt. Scott Christopherson is really a really talented shooter who has nailed 131 career 3-pointers already. He nailed 86 last season, ending up second within the conference and 33rd around the nation at 2.8 each contest. His 44.1 3-point percentage was good for 11th around the country and he has buried a 3-pointer in 34 straight games. You will most likely see Iowa State using a lot of three-guard sets due to having so much talent in the backcourt. Transfers Chris Allen, Chris Babb, and Tyrus McGee are reliable shooters. Allen and Babb ended up Big 10 starters and both averaged just below 10 points per game back in 2009-10. McGee is coming over from Cowley Community College.

Chris Allen brings three years of experience from his time at Michigan State. He’s performed in 14 tournament games and two Final Fours. He can not merely shoot from the outside, but is also a defensive stopper.

Chris Babb drained 69 three-point baskets in his final year at Penn State and averaged 10.2 ppg in Big Ten play.

Tyrus McGee nailed 115 3-point baskets last season at a 48.7% clip. He was a NJCAA First-Team All-American and can play both at the two and at point.

Two extra players to keep an eye on are Bubu Palo and Tavon Sledge. Palo played all 32 games last season and proved capable of playing the point spot. Sledge is the person with the most potential. He is incredibly quick and was ranked as the 3rd best player in New York City after averaging 25.3 points and 5.2 assists in his senior season.

Frontcourt

Mevlin Ejim and Jordan Railey each ought to see time as returning letterman while Royce White, Anthony Booker, and Percy Gibson will all make an impression as newcomers.

Ejim had a very productive freshman season last season for Iowa State. The Canadian put up 10.3 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. He was only the 12th freshman in Cyclone history to record double figures. Despite his quality production, Hoiberg thinks Ejim will likely be even better this year. Ejim is much more of a small forward, but was forced to play down low last year because of the team’s lack of depth.

Royce White was an incredibly highly touted recruit two years in the past, but did not perform a game with the Minnesota Golden Gophers and then he sat out last season right after transferring to Iowa State. White is powerful and can be an fantastic passer. He’ll be beginning at power forward and may be the star of this team.

Percy Gibson was one of the top rated big guys in Michigan last season, putting up 21.2 points and 12 boards every game. Booker was a top-50 player coming out of high school, but only averaged 6.4 points and 4.1 boards when he was a freshman for Southern Illinois.
