AFC West Predictions & 2008 NFL Picks
August 4, 2008
The AFC West has been dominated typically by the San Diego Chargers over the past couple seasons. Someone is going to have to step it up and make a move if they want to steal the AFC West division title. Let’s take a look at all the teams and odds in the AFC West:
San Diego Chargers ( Odds to Win the AFC West -357) – The Chargers will produce another quality team again in 2008. Their only real problem is their rehabilitating quarterback as well as a rather weak secondary. If they can adjust to these problems they will have another deep playoff run without a doubt. The Chargers acquired running back Jacob Hester to help carry the offensive load. San Diego averaged about 28 points a game last year and was fourth in the NFL. LaDainian Tomlinson is a serious threat. In 2006 he had 2323 yards and in 2007 he had 1949. He will have another great year in 2008 as he will lead the Chargers to an AFC West title.
Denver Broncos ( Odds to Win the AFC West +500) – It has now been three years since the Denver Broncos last made the playoffs. Fans are starting to lose their patience and head coach Mike Shanahan will look to change this. He will be in his 14th season and he knows a lot about the game of football and what it takes to be successful. Shanahan has built a team that can run the ball on offense and force turnovers on defense. The Broncos have many good players on the roster and hope to do well in 2008. Last year they produced almost 25 points per game and allowed almost 27. It is going to be interesting to see if the Denver Broncos can compete in the weak AFC West.
Oakland Raiders ( Odds to Win the AFC West +1000) – For the first time in a long while, the Raiders actually look promising on both ends of the ball heading into the 2008 season. Oakland has a fairly weak schedule and should be able to pick up many wins. Their young players should also gain some confidence as the season plays out. I feel that their biggest strength is going to be the ability to force turnovers and intercept the ball. They have two of the best linebackers in the game in Kirk Morrison and Thomas Howard. These two combined for 10 interceptions last year and will look to improve on that numbers in 2008. Opposing quarterbacks will be in trouble when they face the Raiders who look to make a real run in the AFC West this year.
Kansas City Chiefs ( Odds to Win the AFC West +1000) – The Chiefs will only look to be an average team at best in 2008. Kansas City is looking to develop their young players in hopes of contending sometime in the near future. Youth is one of their biggest strengths heading into the new season. They have a roster that is jam packed with players 26 years and younger. The Chiefs also have 12 newly drafter rookies. They will be very fast and have a lot of agility but the learning process may take a while. I don’t really think that Kansas City can compete this year in the AFC West but if you give them a couple years they will be ready to go.
