2009 SEC Football Predictions

September 2, 2009

2009 SEC PredictionsSEC football is home to some of the top college football teams in the country, and this year looks no different, as they have five teams in the preseason top 25, including the defending National Champion Florida Gators at No.1. Here is a quick look at how I see the SEC playing out in 2009.

SEC EAST:
All signs point to the Gators repeating as the SEC Champions in 2009, and making a run at their 3rd National Championship in the last four years. It also marks the final chapter for Gator’s quarterback Tim Tebow, who could cement his legacy as one of the best college football players of all time with another championship and 2nd Heisman Trophy. The Georgia Bulldogs are ranked lower than four other SEC teams, but could end up playing in a BCS Bowl if they can run the table outside of their game against the Gators, as the Bulldogs avoid playing, Alabama, LSU, and Mississippi out of the West. I also look for both Tennessee and Vanderbilt to play in bowl games this season, while the Wildcats sit at home during postseason play. Bet who you think will win the SEC this season at Sportsbook.com.

1. Florida GatorsĀ
2. Georgia Bulldogs
3. Tennessee Volunteers
4. Vanderbilt Commodores
5. South Carolina Gamecocks
6. Kentucky Wildcats

SEC WEST:
Even though the Gators are arguably the best team in the SEC this season, the SEC West is absolutely loaded with talent, as Alabama, Mississippi, and LSU all have the potential to win the West and finish the season in the top 10. I think it’s a complete toss up between the Crimson Tide and the Rebels for the top spot, but I ended up giving the edge to Alabama because of the defense they have coming back from their near championship run in 2008. Unlike Alabama and Mississippi the LSU Tigers have to play both Georgia and Florida out of the East, and it figures to be what keeps them out of the SEC title game. I also have both Arkansas and Auburn headed back to postseason play, after both teams finished 2-6 in the SEC last season and failed to win 6 games.
