2009 Pac 10 Predictions

There is no question that the team to beat in the Pac 10 is USC, the Trojans have won or shared the conference title in each of the past seven seasons, and on top of that have finished in the top 5 each year, including two National Championships. In order for the Trojans to keep the streak alive in 2009, they must overcome losing their starting quarterback, their No.2 receiver, and eight starters on defense. There is no question that head coach Pete Carroll and the Trojans recruit with the best of them, and should be able to replace each starter with ease, but this could be the year the Trojans get knocked off their horse and finish outside of the top spot in the Pac 10. Teams like California and Oregon are both looking very strong heading into the 2009 season, and could be the team to overtake the Trojans. Also, I think everyone in the Pac 10 better keep a close eye on the UCLA Bruins, as they have 16 returning starters and finally get the quarterback they want under center. A couple other teams that could be in the mix are the Arizona Wildcats and the Oregon State Beavers, as both these teams have played fairly well against the Trojans in recent years. Two other teams that could make some noise in the Pac 10 this season are Stanford and Arizona State, as both should improve off their 5-7 record from a year ago. That leaves Washington and Washington State, and quite frankly these two teams better get use to losing, because I don’t see any better luck for these schools in 2009. Some like to think of the Pac 10 as a weak BCS conference, but the conference’s 5-0 record in Bowl games last year should have experts thinking otherwise.
