2009 Big 12 Football Predictions
September 2, 2009
The Big 12 football conference might not have the depth of the SEC, but there is no question that they can rival the SEC when it comes to the top teams in the country. The preseason top 25 has three Big 12 teams in the top 10, plus another two teams earning a spot as well. The Big 12 is hoping to once again have a team play for the National Championship in 2009, as the Oklahoma Sooners fell just short last year against the Florida Gators in the title game.
BIG 12 NORTH:
The North simply does not compare to the talent in the South, but there are a couple of pretty good football teams that will take the field this season. Both Kansas and Nebraska snuck into the top 25, and figure to be key players in who wins the division title this year, but don’t count out the likes of Colorado and Kansas State. The Jayhawks should have the top rated offense in the North this season with the return of QB Todd Reesing, RB Jake Sharp, and WR’s Dezmon Briscoe and Kerry Meier, but they don’t figure to have the defense to keep up with any of the top teams out of the South. I am a big fan of what head coach Bo Pelini is doing at Nebraska, but they must play at Kansas, and that figures to be the game that decides who wins the division. Look for a big drop off in Missouri, while Iowa State continues to try and rebuild. Check out the latest Big 12 football odds at Sportsbook.com.
1. Kansas Jayhawks
2. Nebraska Cornhuskers
3. Colorado Buffaloes
4. Kansas State Wildcats
5. Missouri Tigers
6. Iowa State Cyclones
BIG 12 SOUTH:
Last year the Big 12 South featured some of the best and most entertaining football all season, as Oklahoma, Texas Tech, and Texas all finished with a conference record of 7-1, but it was the Sooners who ended up winning the conference title on a tie breaker. Both Oklahoma and Texas figure to be just as good if not better this season. Oklahoma’s QB Sam Bradford and Texas’s QB Colt McCoy are both back after incredible seasons in 2008, and both figure to be in the mix again for the Heisman Trophy. Keep a very close eye on the Oklahoma State Cowboys, as they come into the season ranked No.9, if they are able to upset Texas at home they could end up playing Oklahoma in their season finale for the right to represent the South in the Big 12 title game. The Red Raiders figure to have a big drop off this season, as they must replace QB Graham Harrell and star WR Michael Crabtree, but I do however think they are headed for another winning season.
