College Football Predictions | 2009 BCS Championship
June 24, 2008
It is almost time for the 2008 college football season to get started. The new season will begin at the end of August, but this doesn’t mean we should wait until then to look at some of the teams out their and the best odds. Many sports bettors and fans across the globe are wondering who is going to win the BCS National Championship this year? There is no definite answer, but there are several teams that come to mind. Last season, the number 2 ranked LSU Tigers faced off against the number 1 Ohio State Buckeyes in the BCS title game. The game was very entertaining to watch, as the Tigers went on the win the game by a final score of 38-24. It also marked the second consecutive BCS Championship loss in a row for the Ohio State Buckeyes. Both these teams will be in prime position to get there again this year, as well as several others. Let’s take a look at some of the early teams and odds to win the BCS National Championship:
University of South California Trojans (3:1) – The USC Trojans are massive early favorites this season to win the 2009 NCAA Bowl Championship. They had a ranking of number 6 in the nation last year and went on to crush Illinois in their Rose Bowl game by a score of 49-17. A lot of people thought that should have deserved a shot at the National Championship, as I felt they were very underrated. They finished off last season with a record of 11-2 and they set a Rose Bowl record of 633 yards of offense. They will come into the new season hungry to win. A big concern for them will be at quarterback. Will Mark Sanchez be able to lead this team to another Pac 10 title? It’s not quite certain just yet, but I think he will shine in the spotlight. Stafon Johnson, C.J. Gable and Joe McKnight will lead the way at running back and at the receiving end of the ball they will look for big numbers from returning starters, Patrick Turner and Vidal Hazelton. The defense is also going to be very good this season. They have one of the top defenses in the entire nation and some people think that USC has some of the best starting LB’s and DB’s out there. With all this said, it’s not hard to see why the USC Trojans are the early favorites to win the BCS title.
Oklahoma Sooners (6:1) – There are 4 teams tied at 6:1 odds as early favorites to win the National Championship. In this crowded field, I think that the Sooners have the easiest schedule coming out of the Big 12. They do not have to play Texas or Texas Tech and they have a Heisman trophy candidate at quarterback in Sam Bradford. He will be playing behind a very strong and dominate offensive line and it will be interesting to see how he handles the switch to a no huddle offense. Last season be put up some very impressive numbers. He has 237 completions for 3121 passing yards. He also had 36 touchdowns and a very high completion rate of nearly 70%. If he puts up similar numbers this season then Oklahoma has a good shot of going all the way this year.
Louisiana State University Tigers (12:1) – Coming into the new season, the Tigers have finally cut ties with their talented quarterback Ryan Perrilloux. There were many problems on and off the field involving him, but now that it is settled, they will not have to worry about it. Freshman Jarett Lee will get the start for LSU and the Tigers will have to get though a very tough SEC schedule that will include games against both Auburn and Florida. It will be interesting to see how their fair this season with some tough losses at key positions. Last year they managed to get to the BSC Championship game and win with a record of 11-2. I feel that if they can get thought the season with 2 losses again, they will make it to the big game again and possibly repeat.
