2009 ACC Football Predictions

September 3, 2009

2009 ACC PredictionsIn 2008 the ACC was one of the more balanced conferences in all of football, as 10 of the conferences 12 teams appeared in a bowl game, with only Virginia and Duke not making a postseason appearance. Because the teams were so evenly matched the ACC provided some of the most entertaining games all season. When the regular season came to an end it was Boston College and Virginia Tech who met in the conference title game for the 2nd straight year, and once again it was the Hokies who represented the conference in the BCS Championship series. With the season just about to get underway here is a quick look at how I see the conference shaping up in 2009.

Atlantic Division:
Last year it was the Clemson Tigers who entered the season as the preseason favorite, but things went completey wrong and the Tigers ended up firing their head coach halfway through the season. While the Tigers are not the favorite to win the division this season, they could be the surprise team this season. The oddsmakers have the Florida State Seminoles as the favorites to represent the Atlantic in the conference title game for the first time since 2005. The team to beat is still Boston College, as they try to make it three straight seasons on top of this division. The other team that I think has a legit shot at winning this division is North Carolina State, who have 14 starters back and really finished strong with 4 straight conference wins in 2008. I have little hope for both Wake Forest and Maryland to contend this season, and both could struggle to get back to postseason play. Bet who you think will win the ACC this season at Sportsbook.com.

1. Florida State Seminoles
2. Clemson Tigers
3. Boston College Eagles
4. NC State Wolfpack
5. Wake Forest Demon Deacons
6. Maryland Terrapins

Coastal Division:
Virginia Tech has owned the Coastal division over the past few years, and it looks as though they will be the team to beat again in 2009. The Hokies should be locked and loaded with 16 returning starters, considering they won the division last year with just 10 starters coming back. Both Georgia Tech and Miami figure to be strong contenders to overtake the Hokies this season, but both must play Florida State and Clemson out of the Atlantic division. The surprise team in the Coastal division could very well be the North Carolina Tar Heels, as they likely would have won the division last year if it wasn’t for injuries. Virginia should continue to get better, while Duke remains at the bottom of this division once again. Check out the latest odds for every ACC game at Sportsbook.com.

1. Virginia Tech Hokies
2. Miami Hurricane
3. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
4. North Carolina Tar Heels
5. Virginia Cavaliers
6. Duke Blue Devils
