It’s time for our 2008 US Open preview and predictions, as almost a week away from some of the most exciting golf action of the year. The buzz around Tiger Woods isn’t so much as how many majors he will win this year, but whether or not he will be able to play at 100% at the US Open. This year Torrey Pines par 71 South course is going to be the host of the event, and it’s a course that Tiger has simply dominated in his career. Angel Cabrera will look to be the first golfer to win back-to-back titles since Curtis Strange did so in 1988 and 1989. While the US Open changes courses from year to year, what you might not have known is that the first US Open was played on Oct. 4th of 1985 on a 9-hole course in Newport Rhode Island. It was only 36 holes and had a field of only 10 players. So it’s easy to see how the game has transcended over the years to what it is today. There is quite the payday at the US Open as last year a purse of $7 million was awarded, with $1.26 million going to the winner Cabrera. Playing in the US Open for many players is much more than the money, and those who finish in top 15 get that automatic bid to the Open the following year. Here is a look at 3 golfers we feel have a great shot at being in the final couple groups on Sunday afternoon.

Tiger Woods – 7/4 odds at Sportsbook.com
Besides being the best golfer in the world today, Woods and Torrey Pines is a combination other golfers shouldn’t want any part of, as Tiger has won 4 straight and 6 of the last 10 at the Buick Invitational played at Torrey Pines early each golf season. Before the Masters Tiger looked like he was unbeatable, but an average performance landed him 2nd. Since the Masters Tigers has had knee surgery and spent time recovering in the plan to be back in action for this event. Even though he might not be at his best, he is still the man to beat until he finishes out of the top 2.

Jim Furyk - 20/1 odds at Sportsbook.com
It would be hard to find a player that has played better than Furyk the last 2 years at the US Open. Furyk is coming off two straight 2nd place finishes, not to mention he won the whole thing back in 2003. The reason Furyk has so much success at the US Open is his driving accuracy, where he ranks 19th overall. Ignore everything else coming into this event, and accept the fact that Furyk will be around the leader in the final round.

Retief Goosen – 25-1 odds at Sportsbook.com
Here is another player that has had a lot of success at the US Open, as he has just as many titles as anyone else in the field with two. The first one came back in 2000 when he needed a playoff to hold off Mark Brooks, and the most recent came in 2004 where he held off runner up Phil Mickelson. Goosen did have a solid finish at the Masters where he finished tied for 17th and was a lot closer after 3 rounds. Goosen’s best finish came at the WGC-CA Championship where he came in 2nd. Goosen is in action this weekend at the Stanford St Jude Championship for a final tune up for the Open. It’s usually all or nothing for Goosen at the US Open, and after a couple bad years we think its Goosen’s time to shine again.
