2008 Travelers Championship
June 17, 2008
Its hard to image more golf after an exciting weekend of US Open play, but in less than 2 days players will be teeing it up at TPC River Highlands for the 2008 Travelers Championship. While many of the top players taking the weekend off to rest up after the US Open there is still a couple of big names that will be taking on the difficult task. Last year Hunter Mahan showed that you could take advantage of playing well at the Open and turn it into a win at the Travelers Championship. There are 6 former winners that will be playing this weekend that includes Mark Brooks who won the tournament back in 1988. The course has seemed to favor guys who hit the ball a long way like Mahan and 2006 winner J.J. Henry. With the tournament right around the corner Jason Lowry is going to take a closer look at some of the favorites this weekend.
Stewart Cink – 14/1 odds at Bodoglife.com
Cink is currently 5th on the money list and 7th in the FedEx Cup Point standings, and is one of 9 former champions of the this tournament to play this weekend. Cink won this tournament back in 1997. While you probably didn’t hear his name to much Cink played pretty well at the US Open where he finished tied for 14th after a 4 under 67 on Sunday. Cink hasn’t won this year, but has a number of quality starts including a second place finish at the PODS Championship, and a very impressive 3rd place finish at the Masters.
Vijay Singh – 14/1 odds at Bodoglife.com
Singh holds the favorite to win the tournament with Cink. If you want to look at the US Open to how he will play this weekend, then it doesn’t look good for Vijay as he came in tied for 65th. Singh does have two 2nd place finishes this season that include the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am and the WGC-CA Championship. But don’t count Vijay out as he did come in 4th here last year.
Kenny Perry – 16/1 odds at Bodoglife.com
Perry has been pretty solid this year, even though he really isn’t a big name in the game of golf. Perry comes in 6th in both the point standings and the money list. Perry is 12th this season in driving distance and he could be a great fit to come in and play well at River Highlands. Perry didn’t play at the US Open so he should be rested, and it was only a few weeks ago when Perry won the Memorial Tournament.
Hunter Mahan – 20/1 odds at Bodoglife.com
Mahan is your defending champion and he just seems to kick it in gear around this time of the year. He was the runner up in 2006, so it won’t be any surprise to see Mahan near the top again this year. Mahan had a really good weekend at the US Open again this year finishing tied for 18th. For some reason this guys season doesn’t seem to kick in gear till the US Open, and it was no different this year. Mahan has been lights out with his irons this season as he is 4th in greens in regulation, but will need to improve on his driving and putting if he wants to win again this weekend.
Justin Rose – 22/1 odds at Bodoglife.com
Rose would of likely been a much better favorite this weekend had he not stunk it up at the US Open, as he failed to even make the cut. Many thought Rose would play better after finishing 2nd at the Memorial tournament behind Perry. It was Rose’s only finish in the top 10 this season, and its hard to imagine him being that good this weekend. Even though they got him up there in the top 5 odds to win this weekend, we would look elsewhere if we were you.
