Toyota/Save Mart 350 2008 Picks & Odds
June 18, 2008
NASCAR fans I hope you are ready for a little change this weekend as we take a closer look a the 2008 Toyota/ Save Mart 350. For those that are unfamiliar with what makes this race different than all but one other race this season, is that is raced on a road course instead of your typical oval tracks. The race is set to get underway on Sunday June 22nd at Infineon Raceway in California, and while some drivers can’t wait to get going, there are plenty that wish they could just skip this race completely. Just to give you an idea of how this course can play to the lesser named driver, Juan Montoya took the trophy here a year ago, and he only has one finish in the top 10 in 15 starts this season. While some of the bigger names have been able to tackle this track in years past, Jason Lowry is ready to take a closer look at many of the drivers this weekend including the favorites, guys in the middle of the pack, and some long shots that might be able to pull of the victory this weekend.
Favorites:
Jeff Gordan 4/1, Tony Stewart 4/1, Kevin Harvick 8/1, Juan Montoya 8/1, and Robby Gordon 10/1
This group is full of drivers that do well on road tracks, and you can pretty much expect one of these drivers to pull of a win this weekend. Gordon has simply dominated road races with 9 career wins and 15 top 5 finishes. Stewart is another big threat as he has 6 road course wins and seems to always find his way in contention at these races. Montoya is your defending champion of the race, while Harvick and Robby Gordon both have wins on road courses during there careers. We look for Stewart to be the guy to break through this weekend, but if he fails Gordon could sneak in his first win as well.
Middle of the Pack:
Boris Said 20/1, Denny Hamlin 20/1, Jamie McMurray, Ron Fellows 20/1, Kurt Busch 20/1, Kyle Busch 20/1, and Ryan Newman 30/1
While many of the drivers you find in the middle of the pack would normally be guys that are right up there with some of the best odds to win week in and week out, they just don’t perform as well on road courses. Some of it has to do with talent and a lot has to do with the amount of experience the driver has in these types of races. A few of these drivers are getting better, and some have just had bad luck, but if we had to pick a couple guys out of this group to do well it would be Hamlin, McMurray, and Kyle Busch.
Long Shots:
Jeff Burton 40/1, Greg Biffle, Dale Earnhardt Jr. 40/1, Carl Edwards 40/1, Clint Bowyer 50/1, and Kasey Kahne 75/1
You can pretty much count these guys out of winning the race this weekend, but you just never know what to expect. Burton, Bowyer, and Biffle all finished in the top 5 last year in this race so this year could easily be the year they break through. Earnhardt Jr. likely learned a thing or two from his father, as he was able to win this race back in 1995. Also Kahne and Edwards have been two of your hottest drivers this season, and Kahne has simply been on fire the last few weeks. While its unlikely a surprise winner could easily come out of this group.
While we ran through most of the field, there are still some drivers out there that we didn’t mention.
