2008 NASCAR Sharpie 500 Predictions & Preview
August 19, 2008
The “Race for the Chase” is in full force, after Carl Edwards was able to hold off Kyle Busch for the win at the 3M Performance 400 last week. This week drivers gear up for the 2008 running of the Sharpie 500, as they head back to Bristol Motor Speedway for the 2nd time this season. Edwards could really make some noise here this weekend, as he is the defending champion of this event. With most of the drivers sitting pretty safe in the point standings guys like Kasey Kahne and Denny Hamlin are sitting at the 11 and 12 spots, less than a 100 points ahead of Clint Bowyer and David Ragan. Jeff Burton was the winner of the previous event at Bristol this season, and could be looking for a sweep in 2008. To get you going on the event this weekend, Jason Lowry is going to bring you his weekly 1-2-3 prediction for the race.
1.
Carl Edwards +500 at Sportsbook.com
Edwards look like he is going to be the guy that keeps Kyle Busch from running away with the points championship, as he now has his win total up to 5 on the season. Coming into this even as the defending champion has to give Edwards some confidence, and with all the success Chevy and Ford has had on this track, its going to be hard for anyone to beat this guy, let alone Busch this weekend.
2.
Matt Kenseth + 1000 at Sportsbook.com
Kenseth was the two-time defending champion in this event before Edwards ended that run last year, but it didn’t help that Kenseth got knocked out of the race due to an accident. Kenseth has been pretty solid on this track throughout his career with 10 top 1o finishes, and those two wins. We really like Kenseth to do well this weekend, and the fact that he drives a Ford gives him even more of a chance to come up big on this track.
3.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. +800 at Sportsbook.com
While all the talk is on Edwards and Busch, the Hendrick Motorsports team has the No. 3 and No. 4 drivers in the point cups standings, and one of them is Earnhardt Jr. If Earnhardt Jr can come out and do well here this weekend, it could be the start of something in his quest at winning a points championship. Jr. knows what its takes to win here, as he took home the checkered flay back in 2004.
