2008 PGA Championship Picks & Odds
July 29, 2008
We are only a week away from the final major of the season, as the 2008 PGA Championship is set to get underway August 7-10. Its going to be a little different this year as we again have to go through another major without Tiger Woods, and while fans are likely upset, the rest of the field is likely jumping for joy, as Woods has owned the PGA Championship the last 2 years, and 4 times in his career. This year marks the 90th anniversary of the PGA Championship, as its set to get underway at Oakland Hills Country Club. What some people might forget about this historic event, is that from 1916-1957 the tournament was played under match play. Its been stroke play ever since, and its going to be fun to see which golfers take home the big shares of the $7,000,000 purse. To help us get going professional handicapper Jason Lowry is ready to give you a closer look at some of the favorites chances of winning the final major.
Phil Mickelson +600
Phil has always played pretty well at the PGA Championship, as he has 7 top 10 finishes, including his first and only win back in 2005. Mickelson has hit a slight dry spell, over the last couple of years, as he hasn’t won a major since the Masters back in 2006. Mickelson does have two wins this season at the Northern Trust Open and the Crowne plaza Invitational. We think Mickelson is primed for a solid finish this year at the PGA Championship.
Ernie Els +900
Els had his best finish at the PGA Championship last year, when he finished 3rd, but over his career this tournament really hasn’t been that well to him. One thing he does have going for him, is he finished tied for 5th the last time the tournament was played at Oakland Hills. We got Els finishing in the top 10, but we don’t think he will be walking away with the trophy.
Vijay Singh +1200
Singh has slightly slowed down in 2008, as he has yet to put up a victory this season, for a guy that has 30 professional wins throughout his career, it might be a little hard to swallow. What Singh should be happy about is playing at the PGA Championship, where he has won the event twice, with the most recent coming back in 2004. Singh will have to deal with the fact that he has missed the cut ach of the last two years, and if you want our opinion we say stay clear of the guy from Figi.
Padraig Harrinton +1400
The two time defending British Open Champion, might sound good to pick to win this weekend, but the thing is this guy has yet to finish better than 17th, and has missed the cut or not played 7 times since 1996. Harrington could surprise everyone this weekend, but our guess is, he makes the cut, but isn’t found in the top 10.
Sergio Garcia +1400
Who can forget Garcia and Woods doing battle at Medinah back in 1999. Garcia was the favorite just a couple weeks ago at the British Open, but couldn’t come through with the performance need to stay anywhere near the top 10. Garcia finished tied for 3rd back in 2006, and we got a gut feeling that this guy is going to come ready to play next weekend.
So there you have a look at 5 guys who have a really great shot at winning the PGA Championship.
