2008 Pac-10 Football Predictions & Season Preview
July 18, 2008
This upcoming season in college football it looks like one team is going to dominate the PAC 10. This team is the USC Trojans. This doesn’t come as much of a surprise to me as they are stacked full of talent. Also it does not look like any other team will even come close to competing with them. USC are huge favorites heading into the new season. Let’s take a look at their team and odds as well as a couple of others:
Southern California Trojans (-300) – This season the Trojans are massive -300 favorites to win the PAC 10. The bad news for them is that they lost a lot of talent to the NFL draft on both offense and defense. The bright side is that USC has tons of talent coming back as well as some new talent. They seem to always have a very good quarterback every year. Both Palmer and Leinart, who are now in the NFL won Heisman Trophies with USC. Their former QB John David Booty is also gone so they will have to rely on backup Mark Sanchez to lead the offense. It will be interesting to see how he does as he will look to shake off some rather poor starts in 2007. At times last season he seemed to struggle with interceptions and has some problems with hesitation, but will get a fresh start this year. His receivers are all top notch and they have high expectations. Superstar, Vidal Hazelton is the most athletic playmaker on the team and will look to continue to dominate. On the defensive end they should be a top unit for sure, led by a couple of senior linebackers in Rey Mauluga and Brian Cushing. USC will be very tough to beat this year.
Arizona State Sun Devils (+400) – What the Sun Devils coach, Dennis Erickson did in his first season was remarkable. He managed to bring new excitement to the program as he led ASU to a respectable 10-2 record. This year, senior quarterback Rudy Carpenter is going to be back and looking to lead the way for his team. He has all the skills required in a very pass happy PAC 10 division. Unfortunately most of the offensive line is going to have to be replaced. This means that with the new youth, ASU is going to need a little bit of time to gel, so they could get off to a slow start. Another promising aspect for Arizona State is their defense. Last year they were rated number 14 in run defense and they will only look to improve this season as they return a great deal of experience. Arizona State should never be counted out of the PAC 10 as they may surprise some people.
Oregon Ducks (+600) – The Ducks had a great season turn bad last year, when QB Dennis Dixon suffered an injury. This caused Oregon to lose its last 3 games of the season as they finished at 9-4. They did go on to win the Sun Bowl against South Florida. This season with the loss of Dixon and start running back Jonathan Steward, they are going to have to do a lot of work. The bright spot in that they will be returning 15 starters and will still to be able to compete with everyone except USC in the PAC 10.
