2008 Nevada Football Predictions

June 24, 2008

Nevada is a typical WAC team that is loaded on offense but played little to no defense.  They seem to be on the right track though if you like football betting, because they did make their third straight appearance in a bowl game last year.

This year should be more of the same for the Woldpack, as they have loads of talent on offense.  If the defense can hold their own then you’ll see this team playing in another bowl game, but if the defense can really step up then college football betting fans might this team challenge for the WAC title.

Offense

Nick Graziano won the starting job at quarterback in 2007, but then was injured in the middle of the season.  Now he finds himself in a heated battle to hold on to his job since Colin Kaepernick stepped in and was absolutely phenomenal.  Kaepernick threw 19 passing touchdowns while only getting picked off three times.  He also was a threat on the ground with 600 rushing yards and six scores.  One thing is for certain, who ever takes the reigns will leave this team in good hands. The line should protect whoever is under center too as four starters return.

The ground game is in safe hands too with senior running back Luke Lippincott.  Lippincott was the leading rusher in the WAC a year ago and should be again in 2008.

Defense

While the offense is solid from top to bottom, the defense needs a little work.

There are eight new faces in the secondary, which could be a good thing since last year’s group was so bad.  It’s hard to tell if any of these new guys will be able to make an immediate impact, and chemistry could be a problem as they get to know one another.

At linebacker, Josh Mauga returns from a season he made 82 tackles while missing five games due to injury.  He is going to be relied on in a big way this year as the other two linebackers are being replaced.

Another problem facing the defense is the demotion of their defensive coordinator and how the team will be switching from a 3-4 to a 4-3 this year.

Outlook

Even with Nevada being as bad as they were on defense a year ago, they still made a bowl game.  You also have to like how they lost to Boise State, Hawaii, and Fresno State by a combined 12 points.  This team is close to breaking out, and we think this could be their year to do so.
