2008 MLB Picks, Predictions, & Season Preview
May 22, 2008
Dave Price’s 2008 MLB predictions give his take on which teams will win their respective divisions, and ultimately, which teams will meet in the World Series.
The AL East is a two team race again between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees. The Red Sox have added young talent to their big name vets to become the elite team in this division. Their starting pitching is also far superior to that of the Yanks. The Sox have won the World Series twice in the past four seasons and I like them to continue to dominate the Yankees.
The Al Central should come down to a two team race as well. Cleveland took the division title in 2007, but I don’t think the Tribe will be able to repeat this season. The Detroit Tigers added star pitcher Dontrelle Willis and big bopper Miguel Cabrera and those acquisitions should be enough to get the Tigers over the hump.
The Halos are clearly the best in the AL West. Like the Tigers, the Angels went out and got another pitcher (Jon Garland) and another stick (Torii Hunter). The Mariners will finish a distant second.
The NL East has emerged into one of the toughest divisions in baseball. The New York Mets have done their part to make a run at the division title with the acquisition of ace Johan Santana, but I don’t think it will be enough. The Phillies’ thee-headed MVP monster of Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Howard, and Chase Utley is the best trio in the bigs and the Phillies’ starting rotation has the appearance of one that will hold up better than New York’s.
Like the Angels in the AL West, the Cubs are the clear favorite in the NL Central. The Cubs squeaked by in a weak division last season. They’ll win it by a landslide in 2008. Japanese star Kosuke Fuudome joins Alfonso Soriano, Derrek Lee, and Aramis Ramirez to form the best order in the division. Chicago also boasts the best starting rotation behind Carlos Zambrano, Ted Lilly, Rich Hill, and Jason Marquis.
The NL West used to be one of the weaker baseball divisions, but the young talent in this division has already come to fruition. The Dodgers, Diamondbacks, and Rockies will all be duking it out for the top spot and I have to give the edge to the defending champion Diamondbacks. Arizona added ace Dan Haren in the offseason to team up with Brandon Webb and Randy Johnson to give the Snakes one of the best starting rotations in baseball.
I like the Detroit Tigers to win the ALCS to advance to the World Series. They will likely have to get past the Boston Red Sox, but with the strong additions to both the starting rotation and the batting order, they have enough talent to do so.
In the NL, I like the Philadelphia Phillies. No other team in baseball has as deep of a lineup and the starting rotation has really improved behind Cole Hamels and company. It was a great effort from the bullpen that enabled the Phillies to catch the Mets in the East last season and I expect that kind of effort all season long to give them an edge.
Ultimately, I like the Tigers to take home the 2008 World Series. Bet the Tigers to win it all at Bodoglife at 9/1 odds.
