Last year was a big year for the Hawaii football betting community, taking care of business against inferior opponents on their way to a perfect record and a BCS Bowl bid against Georgia (even though fans might want to forget that beating.)

It’s going to be tough for the Warriors to repeat that success as they lost quarterback Colt Brennan, their top four receivers, and head coach June Jones.   You won’t see Hawaii going undefeated in 2008.

Offense

The offense is going to be a far cry from last season, with the losses stated above, so you can think of this year as a rebuilding year.

At quarterback will be either senior Tyler Graunke or junior Inoki Funaki.  Graunke proved to be decent in replacing Brennan a few times last season but he did have a few off-field troubles that led to him being suspended this spring.

The whole offensive strategy is changing, going away from the shotgun to seeing the QB under center. This is going to take at least a year to get used to and the new staff wants to try and run the ball more, which the Warriors hardly did the past few seasons.

If you are looking for some good news, you can find it with the offensive line, who does return three solid starters from a year ago.  However, we’ll see how they make the transition from pass blocking to run blocking.

Defense

In 2008 Hawaii is going to rely a lot more on defense, and if the defense doesn’t step up then you won’t see this team playing in the post-season.

There are five starters coming back from a year ago, including two stars in linebackers Adam Leonard and Solomon Eliminian.  These two were all over the field last year when they combined for almost 250 tackles.  Defensive David Veikune can be counted on too, he had seven sacks a year ago.

Outside of those three though, this defense is raw, especially in the secondary.

Outlook

The Warriors will have a new coach, philosophy, strengths, and quarterback so we don’t have to go out on a limb here to say that this team will struggle to rebuild.  If you are going to look for favorable college football lines on the Warriors then you will be disappointed, because this is going to be a long year.  The schedule is pretty tough with no cream puffs like last year.  Instead it’s the Florida Gators and Oregon State Beavers, plus they travel to WAC rivals Fresno State and Boise State.
