Dallas Cowboys Predictions | 2008 NFL Betting Picks
July 23, 2008
Jerry Jones is growing impatient with his beloved Dallas Cowboys that haven’t won a postseason game in 11+ years. Jones will count on head coach Wade Phillips and quarterback Tony Romo who have a combined 0-6 playoff record to take the Cowboys to the promise land now. Despite those grim facts, Dallas Cowboys NFC East NFL predictions look bright with a roster chalk full of talent. The 2008 Dallas Cowboys NFL betting odds to win the 2009 Superbowl are at 6-1 NFL odds.
Quarterback Tony Romo leads a well-oiled Dallas offensive monster that could be even better this season. Romo had a breakout 2008 season by showing the leadership, accuracy and pocket presence of an elite NFL passer. Romo’s regular season was excellent with a 97.4 QB passer rating but his focus seemed to wane late in the season under the media’s spotlight because of girlfriend Jessica Simpson. Jessica Simpson apparently sucked the juice out the Dallas leader’s legs before their first playoff game to the New York Giants. Jessica Simpson’s sexy presence will not be around the Dallas leader this season with their celebrity breakup. One thing Romo won’t worry about is getting harassed by defenders when operating behind arguably the best offensive line in the NFL. The Dallas Cowboys NFC East NFL betting odds are at 10-11 odds.
The ground game is set to make an impact with the 1-2 punch of Pro-Bowler Marion Barber and rookie Felix Jones. Barber is an impact player that runs with power and fury. Felix Jones will provide a gambreaking threat will attack the perimeter with his 4.40 speed and pass-catching skills out of the backfield.
Terrell Owens at 34 years-old is still the most physical player at the WR position in the NFL. Owens is a terror after the catch with his ability to break tackles but has only average hands. T.O will always place behind Randy Moss as the NFL’s best WR because of his shaky hands. Opposite of Owens will be either the injury prone Terry Glenn or Patrick Crayton who is more of a slot receiver than a true #2. Speedster Miles Austin has had an impressive off-season and could see some playing time also. TE Jason Witten is an all-around Pro-Bowl performer that can be unstoppable at times. Witten provides Romo with an invaluable red-zone target. The Dallas Cowboys NFC East NFL betting win TOTAL is at 10.5 WINS.
The Dallas Cowboys defense is aggressive much like the offense by using a variety of attacking schemes. Head coach Wade Phillips is a master of the blitzing 3-4 defense that saw 5 players go to the Pro-Bowl last season. With the additions of Pacman Jones and rookie Mike Jenkins the Cowboys are hoping to get even more production out of a defense that ranked 6th in the NFL last year.
The Cowboys are very solid upfront with Chris Canty, Marcus Spears and Jay Ratliff. NT Jay Ratliff was the real surprise of the unit last season emerging as a disruptive force in the middle giving 100% effort on every play. DE Chris Canty has some decent pass-rush moves but must improve his 3.5 sack total from a year ago. Canty is a beast against the run and was dominant at times last season. Quality DT Tank Johnson gives Dallas the versatility to rush out of the 4-3 and provides quality depth behind Ratliff.
The Miami Dolphins felt that LB Zach Thomas was past his prime and the Cowboys were happy to add him to their defense. Thomas has slowed a step but remains a hard-hitting ballhawk with a great football IQ. On the inside next to Thomas is animal DeMarcus Ware. DeMarcus Ware is a contender for this year’s NFL defensive MVP after a 14 sack 2007 season. OLB Greg Ellis provides the perfect complement to Ware and recorded 12.5 sacks a year ago. 2007 1st round pick Anthony Spencer is an explosive athlete that is poised for a breakout season. ILB Bradie James is excellent in run support rounding out one of the best linebacker units in the NFL.
Last season the Cowboys were picked apart in the secondary and Dallas will need more production from this unit to reach the Superbowl. Terrence Newman is coming off a Pro-Bowl season and can cover most #1 NFL wideouts. Terrence Newman can be burned by bigger receivers that can muscle him around. Their will be a position battle for the opposite cornerback slot between Anthony Henry and Pacman Jones. Jones has loads of talent but hasn’t played since the end of 06″ and Henry is only average. 1st round pick CB Mike Jenkins is a speedy ballhawk that should be an excellent nickelback and could also contend for the starting position. Safeties Roy Williams and Ken Hamlin are both sledgehammer hitters that keep receivers walking on eggshells. Williams is limited in coverage but Hamlin was excellent recording 5 INT’s.
Special teams are a source of strength for the Cowboys with one of the finest units in the NFL. Kicker Nick Folk went to the Pro-Bowl last season and punter Mat McBriar averaged an incredible 47.1 yards per punt last season. The return games have 5 possible gamebreakers in Felix Jones. Pacman Jones, Mike Jenkins, Terrence Newman and Miles Austin.
Dallas has no excuse to not play in the 2009 Superbowl. With Tony Romo in his prime and a strong coaching staff that is aggressive on both sides of the ball this is a very dangerous team. The crazy part about the Cowboys playing in the rough NFC East is that Dallas might not win the division but they could still win the Superbowl. My Dallas Cowboys NFC East NFL betting take is that the Cowboys will win the 2009 Superbowl at a solid 6-1 betting odds.
