Pitching

The Orioles have an ace in Erik Bedard, but he could be on his way out as this team needs more than one guy to rebuild. Bedard went 13-5 last season with a 3.16 ERA and there is not a team and baseball which wouldn’t want to have him. Jeremy Guthrie had a great rookie year, finishing second among AL rookies in ERA, strikeouts and innings. He looks to be a good one, but really doesn’t have much time to blossom as he turns 29 early in the season. Adam Loewen will try to bounce back from shoulder surgery and Daniel Cabrera will try to bounce back from a terrible year in which he led the AL in losses, earned runs, walks, and hit batters. The bullpen has no stars and looks to be paper-thin after losing Chris Ray and Danys Bez to ligament reconstruction surgery.

Offense

With Miguel Cabrera gone to the Astros, this poor offensive team will struggle even more. Second baseman Brian Roberts is a stud, but looks like he will ultimately be trade bait. His 50 steals in 2007 are really jumping out at teams. Right fielder Nick Markakis is likely a guy the O’s will keep and try to build around. He plays exceptional defense and added 23 homeruns, 112 RBIs, and 18 stolen bases in 2007. Without Tejada he had no protection in this lineup. No-namers and has-beens make up the rest of the lineup.

Defense

Luis Hernandez looks to be Tejada’s replacement at short. His range and sure hands impressed last season when he filled in for the injured star. Roberts is among the game’s best second baseman. We expect the O’s to be very solid up the middle. Rightfield is in good hands with Markakis. We may seem lots of different combination in left and centerfield and on the corners. Catcher Ramon Hernandez was a big disappointment last season. The O’s are hoping that injuries were to blame.

Finishing higher than fourth in the AL East would be an act of God. I see the Rays making more improvements this season to overtake Baltimore however, putting the O’s in the basement.

Baltimore’s lineup is admittedly weak, but the pitching staff has got to be better, especially since there is some talent there. Baltimore pitcher’s set a club record with 696 walks in 2007. I think we’ve all heard the old adage that walks will kill you. The ERA of the pitching staff also ballooned to 7.61 over the last 39 games of last season. It seemed obvious that the O’s were cashing in the season. Baltimore is going to be unable to get things turned around until they start playing like champions no matter what the score.
