2008 ACC Football Predictions & Season Preview
July 18, 2008
Right now it looks like the ACC division may be a two horse race. Although there are many talented teams jockeying for position and top spot, I think that two teams stand out above the rest of them. Both the Clemson Tigers and the Virginia Tech Hokies look impressive. I think the better of the two is the Clemson Tigers, who look to be one step above the rest as they look to make their charge to win not only the ACC, but the BCS National Championship as well. Let’s take a look at their team and odds as well as a couple others:
Clemson Tigers (+250) – Clemson Tigers head coach Terry Bowden will have plenty of weight on his shoulders coming into the new college football season. His Tigers are favored to win the ACC title and anything less will be a disappointment. Clemson has one of the most balanced offenses in 2007. They were ranked among the top 5 teams in both rushing and passing. Quarterback Cullen Harper led the ACC in passing efficiency, which made him the first Clemson quarterback to do that in 25 years. The Tigers have many great offensive threats at the key positions. They return two of the nations best running backs in James David and C.J. Spiller. They combined for a total of 1832 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground last season. They also return Aaron Kelly at wide receiver. He had over 100 receiving yards last year to go with 11 touchdowns. It is not hard to see why the Clemson Tigers are leading the way.
Virginia Tech (+250) – V-Tech is one of the top favorites to win the ACC division this year. They are always dangerous and a permanent threat. They did lose 7 starters during the off season, along with 4 of their top receivers as well as running back Brandon Ore. They will look to reload with new talent.
Wake Forest (+650) – Wake Forest will be the sleeper of the conference and could possibly make a strong run this year. Although they did lose some offensive power with the loss of receiver Kenneth Moore and tight end Joe Tereshinski. On the bright side, they return Riley Skinner, who has been a strong quarterback for them. It will be interesting to see if Wake can compete with the fast and strong teams like Clemson.
Boston College (+2500) – BC lost starting quarterback Matt Ryan so there is no way that they will contend this year. His ability and athletics seemed to elevate the entire team. As well as his absence, Boston College also lost their top 2 running backs from last year. They are still in decent shape to have a good season but don’t expect them to get anywhere after these crushing losses.
Duke (+10000), North Carolina State (+5000), Maryland (+1500) – All of these teams had losing records last season and they need some serious work. None of them should be written off just yet, but it looks like they will have to real shot of competing this year.
