In the American League, the Boston Red Sox and the Los Angeles Angels are the two best teams in their league. The Detroit Tigers and the Cleveland Indians in the AL Central have shown problems of late that makes me feel neither of these teams will be up for the challenge against LA or Boston.
Why are the Halos and Bean Towners the best? Each team boasts deep pitching staffs and a nice mix or power and contact hitter on offense. Beckett and Schilling are a deadly one-two punch and Matsuaka has proven to be worth the hype. Weaver, Santana, Lackey, and Escobar, and Colon sounds like an All-Star team staff. Ortiz and Big Papi provide the power for Boston and Vlad and Garrett Anderson do the trick for the Halos. The other guys set the table.
In the National League, there is still some work to be done. The New York Mets are still the best team in the NL East, but their pitching staff doesn’t appear to be one that can bring home a World Series title. The Phillies looked poised to catch them until Chase Utley broke his hand.
In the NL Central the Cubs were gaining on the Brewers until an injury to Alfonso Soriano caused a halt. I still think the Cubs will get it done in the Central as the pressure of a pennant chase likely gets the best of the young Brewers.
In the West, the most talented team, the LA Dodgers, is currently sitting in fourth place. With Penny, Lowe, Tomko, and Hendrickson, the Dodgers have one of the better staffs in the NL but the offense has gone into hibernation of late. The Padres rarely bring offense to the table but the pitching is always good with guys like Peavy and Young dealing daggers in nearly every start. I think the D-Backs and Rockies will trail off opening up a race between LA and San Diego. The Dodgers because of the potential of their offense, would be the bigger postseason threat.
Ultimately, at this point, it appears that the AL has the advantage as we approach mid August, but we saw the benefit of getting hot at the right time last year as the Cards won it all despite finishing the regular season at just five games over .500.
We like the Boston Red Sox to get motivated the last month of the season as the playoffs near and to carry that momentum right into the playoffs. Boston looks to be the clear favorite to win the 2007 World Series.
