The oddsmakers have spoken making Tiger Woods their favorite to win the Tour Players Championship at 5/2 odds. If you’re not taking the field at 3/1, you may look to Phil Mickelson at 14/1, Vijay Singh at 16/1, or Ernie Els at 20/1.

I hope you’re not still riding the Zach Johnson buzz after his Masters title. His 84th place finish at Wachovia is enough to get me looking the other way. He offers great odds at 50/1, but I strongly feel you’ll just be throwing your money away at Sawgrass’ precision course with this guy.

I think you’re also throwing your money away on last year’s Tour Players Championship winner Stephen Ames. He should feel very good about last year’s title in the PGA’s flagship event since it has been an American dominated course and he hails from north of the border. I don’t see him getting it turned around this weekend as he hasn’t finished better than 20th in his last 4 tournaments.

Vijay Singh, Ernie Els, Adam Scott, Retief Goosen and Davis Love III are all solid contenders, but I like Phil Mickelson’s chances the best if you are looking for more value than Tiger. Lefty has been shooting well in 2007 earning first place and second place finishes as well as two third place finishes. He is currently ranked third in the world and has the fourth best scoring average on the tour. Unlike some of the other big names, Mickelson has showed very well in his last two tournaments tying for third at the Byron Nelson and the Wachovia Championship. This guy will be Tiger’s biggest challenger because of his crafty iron play which gives him a big edge over the field at a course with not much room for error.

Tigers’ problems off the tee at Wachovia last weekend will not be as forgiving at Sawgrass. Also, Tiger hasn’t won this event since 2001 and only five men have ever won the Tour Players Championship more than once. Lefty is hungry for his first TPC title and in my opinion, he has the best chance to best Tiger.
