Vince Young’s rookie season heroics raised the stakes to an unrealistic level. In 2004 and 2005 the Titans only combined for one more win that they chalked up last season. An 8-8 season was magic for Titans fans who saw their team win just four games in 2005. Vince Young is without a doubt the franchise quarterback the Titans were in need of. In just one season he changed the tune of a once-proud franchise which has fallen on some tough times. Unfortunately, the optimism stops there and the reality hits hard. The Pacman Jones Drama has taken all attention away from a positive season and put a negative spin on this franchise. Also, unfortunately for Young, no talented receiver joined him in camp and for the defense, no big name pass rusher was brought in. So what should we expect from Tennessee this season. About all you can expect from Young with no help, head coach Jeff Fisher, and a defense which allowed the most yards from scrimmage in the NFL last season — a step backwards. Unless Young can pull off the miraculous in nine games this season, the Titans are looking at another year of .500 or worse ball. I don’t like to doubt young, but I have these boys chalked up as winning just six or seven games.

I’ll give kudos to offensive coordinator Norm Chow who implemented elements of the college spread attack and even some read-option to his West Coast offense to best utilize Young’s talents. The running game was prevalent again last season as defenses focused on Young opening up holes for the run, but with Travis Henry gone and no clear successor in place, it could be back to square-one. And the receiving corps has no go-to guy who Young can count on in key situations. Tennessee’s best play this year could be Young scrambles.

Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz’ defensive scheme doesn’t fit his personnel and as a result, the Titans struggled. He needs to think about going to a cover-two because his defensive backs don’t have the lockdown skills to operate well in this man-heavy system. I’d like to see Schwartz resist his tendencies and play the cover-two defense which held the Colts to 14 and 17 points in last year’s meetings. Until this team can find a powerful pass rusher, the defense is going to be slow to turnaround. Last season, the Titans notched just 26 sacks, the fanchise’s lowest output since 1972.
