When is this still new franchise going to be ready to compete for a playoff spot? I’ll tell you right now that you impatient Texans fans will have to wait at least another season. The Texans are without a doubt a work in progress. QB Matt Shaub will be looked upon as the new leader of this offense and the face of the franchise with David Carr out, but his inexperience has me hesitant to think we can expect him to outshine Carr right away. After all, he has only thrown 161 regular season passes in his career. I’m not sure I buy that David Carr deserved to lose his job. I side more with those who feel that he was the scapegoat. The offensive line was porous during Carr’s five years causing him to run for his life. And with the exception of wide receiver Andre Johnson, he had below-average talent to work with in the skill positions around him. The Texans are putting everything into Schaub thinking that he can be what gets this team over the hump in the AFC South, but I’ve got news for Texans management. He’s no Vince Young and this team is still has one of the worst offensive line in football. Ex-Packers running back Ahman Green will help him out in the back field, but his health has been an issue the last two seasons. Despite some big changes, it’s going to take a couple years to see if they will come to fruition so we can expect to see Houston in the cellar in the AFC South once again.

How bad was the offense last season? The Texans finished 28th in total offense. Head coach Gary Kubiak did tailor a perfect game plan for his personnel however, implementing a short passing attack to help Carr get rid of the ball more quickly before the pressure got through their weak offensive line. This attack produced the highest completion percentage of any team in the league last season at nearly 70 percent. The Texans did not abandon the run with Kubiak knowing that every good passing game comes with a nice complementary running game, but I’m sure he wanted to on several occasions last season.

The Texans defense was terrible in the early going of the 2006 season, but a dramatic turnaround in the last 14 weeks in which Houston has the 10th best defense in the league during that span, gives them some hope heading into this year. Defensive coordinator Richard Smith has four cornerstones in place in middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans, defensive end Mario Williams, cornerback Dunta Robinson, and rookie defensive tackle Amobi Okoye. These guys all have Pro Bowl ability and could eventually become the nucleus of a defense like the one we’ve seen in Tampa Bay the lest decade. However, if the offense finds trouble moving the football, these boys’ performances will suffer as they’ll be spending too many tired downs on the field.
