Nothing went according to plan last season for the Steel City. The problems started before the 2007 season even began when QB Ben Roethlisberger was injured in a motorcycle accident in June. The injury proved not to be serious, but his loss of training time greatly affected his timing and stamina. Then, on top of that, appendicitis showed up and kept him out of the season opener. On top of Roethlisberger’s distractions, the team had to deal with questions surrounding Bill Cowher’s future with the team. Steelers fans were sick to their stomachs watching their boys win just two of their first eight games — not exactly what you would expect from a defending Super Bowl champ. A late season rally allowed Pittsburgh to save face with a .500 mark for the season, but it was apparent to fans that this team would not be postseason bound before Thanksgiving. Now in 2007, the Steelers will try to get back on the horse and erase a disappointing campaign. They’ll have to so under a new head man, Mike Tomlin, and a new offensive coordinator, Bruce Arians. How Big Ben and the Steelers respond this season is still to be seen.

2007 will mark Bruce Arians’ second try as an NFL offensive coordinator. His first go around with the Cleveland Browns from 2001 to 2003 wasn’t exactly a tenure of success, but he will have much more talent to work with in Pittsburgh. His tendency to spread the field with four wide receiver packages will look foreign for a Pittsburgh team, but it could be a nice wrinkle to compliment a team rooted in traditionally strong running attacks. If he gets too pass happy, it won’t take long for management to remind him what grind-it-out Steelers football is all about.

Head coach Mike Tomlin was able to keep defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau, so we can fully expect the Steelers to remain in that feared 3-4 front. The problems could come at the linebacker position which is quickly aging, and Troy Polamalu is the only star in the secondary. With that being said, Tomlin and LeBeau are two of the league’s brightest defensive thinkers and their schemes alone will get the most out of their personnel.

Ultimately, with two new coaches, there is going to be an adjustment period for the Steelers. Big Ben is going to have to earn his stripes after a very lackluster 2006 and the defense is going to have to overcome some age. Pittsburgh will be a solid team with some good wins, but we can also expect some bad losses. Look for the Steelers to finish third in the AFC North behind the Ravens and the Bengals.
