With Tiger Woods not participating this week, many favorite lovers are taking the field. I’m here to tell you that this is a mistake. David Toms is also getting some action because of his back-to-back wins in this tournament in 2003 and 2004. His four top ten finishes this year are not quite impressive enough for me to think he’s playing good enough golf to take the trophy again.
More bettors yet will flock to the game’s number two ranked player, Phil Mickelson. I can tell you right now that Phil is much more concerned about next weekend than this weekend. He hasn’t played in a competitive PGA Tour atmosphere since winning The Players Championship nearly a month ago. He was playing great golf up to that point with back-to-back third place finishes in the Byron Nelson and Wachovia Championships prior to winning The Players, but this weekend is all about getting the kinks out for Phil. There’s no way that such a long layoff could benefit his game when he was playing that well. The best thing for him to have done was to continue to ride the momentum. If he thinks that not playing in several tournaments will preserve that momentum, he’s been talking to the wrong shrink.
Vijay Singh looked pretty good all in all last week coming in nine-under par for the tournament. He will play well again this week as he always seems to when Tiger is not playing. He is a consistent golfer, but hasn’t been quite as consistent as we’ve been used to seeing the last couple years. We’ve chalked him up as a good show but no win at Southwind.
Adam Scott is the guy who we’re putting our money on this week. He tied for 6th in The Players Championship and then tied for 5th last week and he won’t the Shell Houston Open to send out March like a lamb two months ago. That’s three finishes 6th or better in his last five tournaments. The other two tournaments in there were not disappointments. He could have played better at The Masters where he shot 12-over, but that was still good for a 27th place tie. He shot under par for the tournament at Wachovia and finished in a tie for 24th. The last two weeks, this tour youngster has built a lot of momentum and even odds makers feel he’s a force to be reckoned with based on his line. He is still showing the kind of value we like to see at 10/1 odds. Make Adam Scott your man on the Tour this week.
