Although they didn’t suffer from the same kind of nasty hangover that afflicted six of the previous seven Super Bowl losers, winning their third straight division title and earning their fourth straight playoff berth, the Seahawks still found difficulty on both sides of the ball in 2006, finishing a pedestrian 19th in both total offense and total defense. Injuries were a major problem, with 12 starters missing a combined 52 games counting the playoffs. QB Matt Hasselbeck was out of wack all season with a variety of ailments and reigning league MVP Shaun Alexander’s six-game absence due to a fractured left foot prohibited the offenses balanced attack. All in all, nine wins and a division title was quite the accomplishment for the plagued season this unit endured.
The defense also did not hold up on its end of the bargain giving up way too many big plays, especially through the air. We’re not talking 10 or 15 big plays, we’re talking 28 plays of 30 or more yards.
The offense’s normally smooth sailing ship was gradually sinking from beginning to end in 2006. The unit’s major weapons were never on the field at the same time together and eight different combinations started on the all important offensive line. If it were not for a weak league, we could have counted the Seahawks out last season. Going into 2007 with restored health, you can expect these talented offensive juggernauts to try to make a statement with an explosive campaign. They’ll need to as the rest of the division continues to mature.
The team hopes new secondary coach Jim Mora and a pair of new safeties, Deon Grant and Brian Russell, will upgrade a secondary that repeatedly allowed big plays, most often due to blown assignments by players not honoring their area responsibilities. An improved pass rush — the team had only seven sacks in their last seven regular season games — and better defense on first down are also a must this season. Mora brings a lot of experience and will likely deliver better without as much pressure on his shoulders. It’s not like this unit lacks talent, there problems were really about not executing their defensive scheme last season. You’ll find it funny how much better the defense will play, too, when the offense is rolling at full strength again this season. I think the 49ers are still a year or two away and Alexander and Hasselbeck are in the prime of their careers. These boys want to make at least one more push for hoisting the Lombardi.
