We normally look for horses showing good value which means steering clear of favorites, but in 2007 you are going to want to take a long, hard look at Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense. Keeping in mind that 6 of the last 10 Derby winners have gone on to Preakness Glory, history appears on Street’s side. However, each of the last two years, Kentucky Derby winners have struck out at the Preakness. If you do decide to go with Street Sense this Saturday, you’re going to want to think about taking him with an exotic bet to get better value.
Before you’re all ready to make Street Sense your prize pony, take a look at Derby runner-up Hard Spun. Hard Spun jumped out to a commanding lead at the Derby before Street Sense passed him on his finishing kick. With the field being smaller at Pimlico (just 14 horses compared to the Derby’s 20) and with the track being shorter, Hard Spun could have enough to hold off Street in the Preakness.
Curlin might just be the horse on the winning ticket. This year’s Kentucky Derby was his only loss in his four-race career, but he still cashed show ticket for his backers. He had a daunting statistic going against him in the Derby which made it impossible for us to pull the trigger on him. No horse without any two-year-old starts has won the Kentucky Derby since Apollo in 1882. However, this horse is a winner and that doesn’t count him out at Pimlico.
Imawildandcrazy guy came in fourth at this year’s Derby. In my opinion, this is the only horse of the top four that you can definitely rule out. His value will make him more attractive than the other three I have mentioned and his race experience cannot be underestimated. He finished just a half length behind Curlin in the Derby but he has had trouble breaking to start races. This will, without a doubt, cost him at Pimlico.
