The 2007 Poinsettia Bowl Odds are up and ready for bettors to take action. The Poinsettia Bowl features the Utah Utes and the Navy Midshipmen and kicks off the college bowl season this year. The game takes place in San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium. Even though a new coach will be patrolling the sidelines for Navy, the Midshipmen intend on sticking to their triple-option approach.

Navy’s offense has helped the Midshipmen lead the nation in rushing in four of the last five seasons. This season, Navy led the nation in rushing attempts, net yardage, and rushing touchdowns in the FBS. This strong running game has made Navy the public’s pick as they figure a ball control offense favors taking the points.
Analysts and bettors alike are really not giving much weight to the coaching change as former assistant coach Ken Niumatalolom, now head man, knows the option well, and QB Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada is very comfortable with the new play caller. A negative facet of the Midshipmen is that they gave up 36.5ppg this season and is the chief reason why oddsmakers have them as 8-point dogs.
Unlike, Navy, Utah has been a very solid defensive team this season. Utah has allowed 20 points or fewer in each of its last six games and the Utes own the nation’s third-lowest points-against average at 15.6, trailing only Virginia Tech (15.5) and Ohio State (10.7). A loss to BYU, for the second straight year in the closing minutes keeping Utah from a better bow, has many thinking letdown for the Utes, but Utah has been very solid in bowl games of late winning their last 4 against the spread. Navy is 3-1 in its last three bowl games against the number as well, doing very well for their bowl backers.
Clearly oddsmakers feel that Utah is the better team here by making them 8-point favorites. The ability of QB Brian Johnson to handle Navy’s weak defense is a big reason why.
