Southern Miss had the talent to win a Conference USA title, but the football gods did not smile down on them this year as injuries dealt them a poor hand. The Golden Eagles’ three home defeats were especially not expected. Southern Miss’ 4-0 record in conference road games does show the toughness and the ability that this team has. Its familiarity with Legion Field, where this bowl will be played, could give the Eagles the edge. Southern Miss beat UAB on this field during the season. Another important factor to note in this matchup is that head coach Jeff Bower will leave Southern Miss after this game. He has spent 17 seasons with the Golden Eagles, many of them successful. He has taken his boys to bowls is 10 of the last 11 seasons. Motivation could weigh in favor of the Eagles as they look to send their head man out on a winning note. QB Jeremy Young and wide receiver Chris Johnson return from injury. These appear to be positive things, but rust could still be there for both players. Southern Miss boasts the nation’s 14th ranked rusher in Damion Fletcher. Bower will hope that Young can pass efficiently enough to keep the Cincy defense honest.
There’s no doubt that the Bearcats should be a little disappointed with playing in an under-the-radar bowl as they posted a 9-3 mark this season in a year when the Big East was as tough as it has been in some time. With Cincy favored by double digits, oddsmakers are not giving life to a letdown theory here, largely because head coach Brian Kelly is a well known motivator. One would think that the Bearcats would come out strong looking for the school’s first double digit win season since 1951. However, oddsmakers could be wrong. This team is highly talented and should be able to challenge an Eagles defense which led Conference USA in points against and yards against. Ben Mauk helped boost the Bearcats offense nearly 16ppg from last season. Mauk actually has the best QB rating in deep QB conference which featured NFL talent Brian Brohm and the explosive Pat White.
This one could in fact come down to a battle of the trenches. Cincy will go to war with its 15th ranked rushing defense against Southern Miss’ solid ground game.
