After a 4-12 season in 2005 and the somewhat surprising hire of first-year head coach Mike McCarthy, the Packers weren’t even close to envisioning a contending season, but that’s exactly what they got in 2006. The Pack’s youth matured throughout the year and helped Green Bay to finish the regular season on a 4-game winning streak, nearly advancing to the playoffs. With Brett Favre back for his 127th NFL season (17th actually), the Green and Gold have their sights set on the playoffs, banking on continued growth from their own homegrown talent, since they declined the option of building with the free-agent market.
Mike McCarthy installed his West Coast-style passing game and a zone-rushing scheme, only to watch offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski leave for the college ranks after just one season. The Packers stayed true to their promote from within approach and made Offensive Line Coach Joe Philbin the new offensive play caller. In the second year of a revamped rushing attack and behind a maturing line with a year of experience under his belt, Philbin and the Pack are aiming to bring up their 23rd-ranked run game to match the eighth-best passing attack in the NFL. As the offensive line improves, the run game will naturally improve as well and this will aid the passing attack. However, at some point, this year or next, when Favre finally hangs ‘em up, the offense will experience a setback that won’t easily be corrected. When this happens, an established run game will help soften the blow.
The improvement of the defensive unit was the driving force behind the Packers’ surge into the playoff picture. A unit that gave up big play after big play in the first half of the season tightened the screws as their understanding of the defensive scheme grew and rookies like A.J. Hawk continued to mature. Finishing in the middle of the pack in total defense, rush defense, and pass defense in 2006 puts the Pack ahead of schedule this season. I foresee an inevitable jump this season in every category now that these youngsters have another year of experience under their belts to build up their confidence. Some of the improvement was attributed to a critical lineup change in which defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins was moved outside and replaced defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila as the starter. The defense rose up versus the run and was more effective in obvious pass rush situations with this shift. Green Bay also benefited from a remarkably healthy season — something a team can never count on. So these boys will just have to be flat out better in 2007 if they want to make the playoffs a reality and getting their is no gimmie for the Packers this year. The key to competing in the central once again will be its stiff run defense which finished thirteenth last season. This gives the pack a chance against the Vikes and Bears who will be the most talented rushing teams in the NFC North this year.
