Seattle Seahawks - NFC West Prediction- 1st Place (10-6)
I like the Seahawks in the West but not by much. It’s apparent that the rest of the division is quickly catching up as young teams like San Francisco and Arizona continue to mature. In 2006, the Seahawks struggled their way to a third straight division title and fourth straight playoff berth. Their mediocre finishes of 19th in total offense and total defense tells the story. Injuries were also a major problem with 12 starters missing a combined 52 games including All-Pro QB Matt Hasselbeck and reigning league MVP Shaun Alexander. The defense gave up 28 plays of 30 or more yards last season and will likely be very susceptible again as this year with a lackluster defense who struggles to pressure opposing quarterbacks. With Alexander and Hasselbeck healthy as well as offensive weapon Deion Branch, the Seahawks will be good enough in the West.
San Francisco 49ers - NFC West Predictions- 2nd Place (8-8)
The 49ers will likely see the .500 mark for the first time since 2002 this season. The 49ers will have to overcome the loss of offensive coordinator Norv Turner, who went on to coach the Chargers. He instilled a run-first scheme which has never been synonymous with 49er teams, but has helped this one move in the right direction. Frank Gore is emerging into one of the premier backs in the NFC. He was the first ever 49ers player to lead the NFC in rushing. He averaged an eye-popping 5.4 yards per carry and also tallied 61 catches to lead the team. He will be San Fran’s workhorse again in 2007. If the 49ers can get some production from receiver pick-ups Darrel Jackson and Ashley Lelie, this offense will really start to come together. Defensively expect improvement as Greg Manusky comes over from San Diego with a wealth of knowledge. Next season could be the year San Fran dethrones Seattle.
St. Louis Rams- NFC West Prediction- 3rd Place (7-9)
Second-year head man Scott Linehan may believe his team has a legitimate shot at a division title in 2007, but I certainly don’t. The Rams haven’t had a winning season since 2003. Ending the 2006 season with three straight wins does do something for the confidence, but this team’s poor defense will shoot itself in the foot again. Stephen Jackson can run all day long and Marc Bulger’s turnover problems will decrease in a toned down offense, but the defense will not hold up on its end of the bargain. Outside of Leonard Little, the Rams have little on the defensive line. James Hall, who comes over in a trade from Detroit, isn’t a work horse like the Rams were hoping for. His tendency to take off downs at a time will have him looking for work again soon. The Rams allowed an NFC-high 145.4 yards per game rushing last season. Not enough pass rush and no run defense will leave the Rams under the .500 mark.
Arizona Cardinals- NFC West Prediction- 4th Place (6-10)
The Cards won’t be in the cellar out West much longer, but they’ll likely struggle early on under new head man Ken Whisenhunt and will be competitive at the end of the year. Whisenhunt will look to utilize Edgerrin James the way he did with his backs in Pittsburgh. With James, QB Matt Leinart, and receivers Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Bouldin, the Cards have a big name offensive nucleus. Some offensive line help will be next on Arizona’s list. Defensively, we can expect the Cards to show opposing offenses many looks changing often between the 4-3 and 3-4. Keeping offenses on their toes will likely be the only way they’ll avoid being embarrassed defensively. We might be having worst to first talk next year.
