New Orleans Saints- NFC South Prediction- 1st Place (11-5)
The Saints pulled off one of the most dramatic turnarounds in NFL history in 2006 going from worst to first. Their season was finally ended in the NFC Championship game which was a place the Saints had never been before in franchise history. A new coach (Sean Payton), a new quarterback (Drew Brees), and a new playmaker (Reggie Bush) made the Saints the top offense in the league in 2006. This powerful, balanced offense which also features north and south runner Deuce McAllister gives the Saints a legit NFC title shot again in 2007. Once they add a few more big names to the defense, the Saints will be the favorites to go marching in to the Super Bowl.
Carolina Panthers- NFC South Prediction- 2nd Place (10-6)
The Panthers were one of the biggest disappointments in the NFL last season winning just eight games as heavy Super Bowl favorites. Injuries were really the story of the Panthers’ struggle that cost three coaches their jobs. We need to hear Delhomme to Smith a lot more often this season and I think we will. If the Panthers have shown us anything over the past five seasons, it’s that they do bounce back. After a seven win season in 2002, they came back with 11 wins in 2003. 2004 was another disappointing seven win season which was followed up by an 11-win regular season and nearly a trip to the Super Bowl. Perhaps 2007 will be the year they rebound to that point if our pattern holds up. It’s not likely though as many of these injuries are associated with age. The Carolina Panthers are a good, solid, fundamental football team. They just aren’t a Super Bowl contender in my book.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers- NFC South Prediction- 4th Place (6-10)
Let’s see, the Saints go from worst to first and the Bucs go from first to worst. It’s not looking any better for Tampa Bay in 2007. The Bucs have had three losing seasons in the four years since winning the Super Bowl and have twice finished dead last in the South during that span. Gruden’s honeymoon is long gone and he is officially on the hot seat this year. The Bucs pulled off the worst to first turnaround in ‘05, something that could become synonymous with this division, but I don’t see it happening this time around. Jeff Garcia is a competitor, but at 37, I question if the Bucs should be looking to build with Simms using Garcia as the back up. This may be the case before the season is over. I do expect a breakout year by former Rookie of the Year Cadillac Williams. He had 65 fewer carries and 380 fewer rushing yards last season because the Bucs often got down early and had to try to pass to get back in games. Tampa Bay will need to grind it out from the git-go and they’ll be able to do that if their once dominant defense can return to form. I fear age has finally caught up with some of these stars like Simeon Rice, Derrick Brooks, Ronde Barber.
Atlanta Falcons- NFC South Prediction- 4th Place (6-10)
When talking about the Falcons, the words circus, disappointment, and major disappointment come to mind. Just when you thought that Marcus Vick was the bad Vick, we find out that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. The Falcons really have no shot this season and would probably save some fans headaches if they didn’t even play a game. A new head coach, Louisville’s Bobby Petrino will find out that discipline is a hole lot harder to enforce at the professional level. His sharp offensive mind will be good for this team in the future, but right now I don’t see an accelerated learning curve. Since the 2004 season of 10 wins, the Falcons have dropped off winning eight in 2005 and seven last year. Promising starts always seem to fade. With Vick’s off the field issues, I can’t see him having the kind of year the Falcons will need to get back to the playoffs. It looks like it’s going to get a hole lot worse before it gets better in Atlanta.
