2007 New Orleans Bowl Picks & Predictions
May 21, 2008
The 2007 New Orleans Bowl odds are up and ready for college bowl betting to begin and Dave Price offers his predictions on this matchup between Conference USA’s second place Memphis Tigers and the Sun Belt’s first place Florida Atlantic Owls. One thing we should be able to count on is both offenses putting plenty of points on the board. Oddsmakers would tend to agree setting the lofty total for this matchup at 66 points.

Florida Atlantic is the lesser known team in this matchup, and despite being favored to win this game, could go under the radar for many sports bettors. Getting to the postseason is huge for this Owls team whose football program is just 7 years old. With that being said, will the Owls be content with just making it to their first bowl game in school history? This is one thing to consider. The Owls come into this one off an upset over Troy, which was supposed to win the Sun Belt. This kind of momentum is always good to have on your side going into a big bowl matchup. Before you completely write off the Owls, consider that Florida Atlantic went out and scheduled five BCS-conference opponents this season and four of those schools were invited to bowls. Of course, Florida Atlantic didn’t beat any of the schools making the postseason of that set, but they did beat the Big Ten’s Minnesota. If you are going to go against the Owls in this matchup, make it because they are 0-7 against the spread on the road in non-conference games or because their weak, 91st ranked rushing attack, doesn’t seem to have the potency to pick apart one of Memphis’ weaknesses. The Owls did turn to an air attack down the stretch and saw some success, averaging over 36 points per contests.
Memphis had high hopes of a Conference USA title in 2007, but the Tigers got off to a slow start which saw them at just 2-4 halfway through. Memphis was able to fight its way to a 5-1 finish being the solid play of QB Martin Hankins. Memphis did lose to two Sun Belt teams, which is undoubtedly why the Tigers are in the underdog role here. Keep in mind that Memphis had the second weakest schedule of any bowl-bound squad. Memphis is very weak defensively, holding only one opponent to less than 21 points. The Tigers allowed 50 or more points to three conference teams. But, the road has treated the Tigers well. Memphis is 10-2 against the spread away from home against teams with winning marks. Memphis was able to win seven games behind its high scoring offense, 23rd in the country at 33.7 points per game. Motivation could be a big factor in this matchup as this has been a very disappointing season for Memphis. Will the Tigers get up for this one or should we expect a half-hearted effort? Dave Price knows exactly how to gage this one!
